While loading the boat on the trailer, a1975 19’ Boston Whaler Outrage, the boat slipped off the keel rollers and the roller cradle on the port side cracked the hull. Ignorant me says “No problem, I’ll get some resin and patch it”. The next trip out I kept an eye on how much water drained when I pulled the boat out and was pleased to see only about ¼ gallon. I was so proud of my repair I had to show it off to my dad when he was in town. To my surprise when I looked under the boat I found a 10” X 3” hole where the patch gave way and water eroded the hull. What’s the best way to patch this, Epoxy, Polyester, Roven, Mat? HELP!!!! I’ll try to post pics when I get to work but I don’t have access to a pic host site.

While you are waiting for replies put that boat in the sun and get all the water out of the hull. This is a MUST before you even attempt any hull repair.

You'll need access to the bilge area for the patch will start there before you beautify the outside. I never did like roller trailers for just that reason. Chief

tengals123, I have a picture but I can't post it. Can I email it to you?

b.Gagnon, Even in full sunlight it's so humid this week nothing is drying. I’m going to put some heat lamps on it the night before I plan to do the work. BTW I use to work with a Natalie Gagnon any relation?

Chief 101, Sorry I have no access to the bilge it's full of foam is there any way the repair can be done from underneath?

Thanks all your help is appreciated.

You will definately need to patch it from both sides, with a lot of build-up on the inside before you tackle the outside. This sort of repair should be done by a professional anyhows. Your foam is going to need removing just to get the saturated foam out. When we see the picture we can better know. That's my opinion...Chief

Chef 101 So you think the foam between the floor and hull is saturated with water even though the boat has been sitting on the trailer for almost 3 weeks and only spent about 3 hours in the water when I did have it out.

You need to remove the foam near the hole just to repair it. Once the foam does get saturated it's dead meat. In my experience it just doesn't dry out. Foam is inexpensive, but getting access to the repair is normally the toughest part to fixing this type of damage. Chief ;)

Go and buy the video "Fiberglass repairs made easy Vol 1" In that tape he repairs a similar area.

Basically, he grinds out the area. Traces the area with some paper. Makes a patch with alternate layers of Roven and Mat to make it as thick as necessary using the paper template to precut each layer into the proper shape. Wets and combines each layer on a work table. Takes the patch to the keel and applies it. Cleans it up and shapes it with a grinder. Uses some fiberglass filler for the final finish work. Sprays area with gelcoat. Sands and buffs...

Well done Ralph! All in 100 words or less. I don't think he needs to buy the video now. :D

Thanks Ralph and Boomyal I'll look for the video, hope they have it at the library.

Can anybody host a picture for me so you guys can see what I'm looking at?

If anyone is familiar with Boston Whaler the hole is under the port side ridge of the live well in front of the outboard so working it from the top would be very difficult.

http://www.westsystem.com/
Here is the West Systems site where they show some repairs. They have seperated repairs into zones, "consequenses of failure" zones. If you have a 3"x10" hole under the waterline you could take on alot of water. I don't advocate using epoxy for this repair as I would use polyester resin and gelcoat. Marine epoxy will certainly do a superb job, but it does take a long time to fully cure. Chief ;)

Re: I Hate My Trailer Please Help

Outrage...Looks like the foam is an integral part of the structure. I think that you need to gain access from the inside and remove enough foam to do a good patch from the bilge side and the outside as described in the article. When you are satisfied with the repair, have the inside foamed. I like to use 6-8# foam for this type of repair since I have never seen it take on water. That way if the repair ever fails when out at sea, the foam will secure the integrity of the hull. Chief ;)
