I was editing some family video and got the idea to stick a small clip out on a free video web hosting site. This is me and my Dad driving past my sister on shore so I can see how the boat rides on the water with the new gas tank full. Notice how it doesn't lift much toward the end where we take off to the left....

My 65 MFG Video Clip

I rendered this with "normal" quality, ie not the best. Originally shot with a Sony DV camera and edited with Roxio VideoWave Movie Creator. It looked low quality when I uploaded it, I haven't seen it yet off the zippyvideos site. I figured if I did a hi-res video clip it would take forever to upload, so this is what you get from a guy with dial up connections... :D

Great video clip! I have a few questions:

Is your fuel tank near full in that video? Your weight distribution looks superb. The entire boat rides nice and level, bow slightly up. Very nice.

Is your sister communicating to you with a 2-way radio? You father waves on command.

That salt water you're running in? Sure is smooth.

Nice to see video clip....gives a whole new perspective.

Cool Mark but you're uping the ante a little bit aren't you. :D Pretty soon everone will expect a video of us ripping out our rotten decks.

I don't think that I saw any Smart Tabs as you made that U-turn in front of the camera. I think I detected a little porpoising as you headed off across to the left side of the screen.

Re: Video Clip of my project on the water.

Thanks, AMD... To answer your questions....

Q: Is your fuel tank near full in that video? Your weight distribution looks superb. The entire boat rides nice and level, bow slightly up. Very nice.

A: Yes, the tank was full or near full. Battery and VRO tank in rear. It really does ride flat.

Q: Is your sister communicating to you with a 2-way radio? You father waves on command.

A: No, LOL! I think Dad saw her with the camera then.

Q: That salt water you're running in? Sure is smooth.

A: Yep, its salt. That is Shelter Island, NY off to the left with the trees, Sag Harbor off to the right. Its also early in the morning so the wind hasn't picked up the waves yet.

Boomy, No Smart Tabs. I decided not to get them until after doing the tank. The "porpoising" you see is me bouncing over my own wake from doing "donuts" moments before the video clip starts. I know it looks like porposing, but in this low res video you can't really tell there are swells there and I'm not going very fast. Listen and you hear it rev up, then back off as we cruise along leisurly. Plus it is a small boat so small waves do make it bounce.

I wish I had something better than dial up to post with.

Mark,

How fast will your MFG go with the 40 on the back? I have a 66 Westfield with the 60HP V-4 Johnson and I have it running around 30MPH with 2 6 gal tanks in the back.

Robert

Re: Video Clip of my project on the water.

Robg,

Ahh, another MFG owner! I can do 28 with a load, a little more with just me. Since I added the 14 gal. tank to the bow it rides flatter and I lost a mile or two per hour, but it rides much better, especially for such a small light boat. I guess with a light load and half or quarter tank it should be back to 30 like before the new gas tank. Also have to play around with the trim again since the boat changed its stance.

That Westfield is Lapstrake, right? How do you like the handling?

Re: Video Clip of my project on the water.

Mark42,

You are correct! The boat has a lapstrake hull which I like very much. It handles very well even with 3 average sized adults and gear. I picked mine up back in '95 for 100.00 dollars (boat and trailer) all it needed was points in the motor. I've been debating about turning it into a center console boat but can't get past the thought of changing the original design. The original seats and finish are still on the boat and in very good condition. I get a lot of compliments when I'm pulling this boat to the lake.

Nice boat. I just went through your project photo's for the first time.

You got that motor from Blackbird? Are those the guys out of Pittsburgh??

If so, good luck with that motor, I've heard a bunch of bad things about that outfit.

Car7,

Glad to hear you like the boat. I hope Blackbird is not the same place you heard about. I believe Blackbird is located in PA. The have a clean record with the BBB, if that means anything. But more importantly is that the motor runs well and is on its second season of use. I have no complaints. I hope it stays that way.

Re: Video Clip of my project on the water.

Hey Sundog!

I have some 1/4" ply and foam I plan on using, but that is as far as I got. I thought it would be easier to make the convertible top so I'm working on that first.

Took off half of last week and all this week and headed out to Sag Harbor, NY. Packed up a bunch of supplies and the top frame thinking I would have lots of time to work on it. HA! All we do is hang out at the bay beach, ocean beach or just cruise around sight seeing in the boat. Other than a good cleaning and waxing, I have not actually worked on the boat. Go figure.

The weather is great and so is the water. I guess I'll work on the top when I get home and have it done in time for an August trip.
