Does anyone have any suggestions where I can find general instructions, plans, whatever for an anchor pulpit?

I recently purchased an older Grady and there's no good place / way to stow the anchor. Thought I'd build a pulpit.

Bob

PS - the general layout, how to lay up glass etc is not a problem. I'm looking for more specifics like with recommended width of the opening for the anchore (Danforth style) to pass thru, best fastening methods, etc, etc.

One thing I don't like about a pulpit is that if your anchor is heavy,in ruff sea's,the pulpit doesn't like it.There are clamps that you can mount on the deck that will hold a danforth anchor down in place in ruff sea's.

Re: Need an Anchor Pulpit

Bolin...I recently added a bow pulpit and self launching anchor roller to my boat. I built it out of teak from scratch...I just got a contour gauge and some cardboard and made up some mock cardboard templates. Then I made a pulpit out of pine to make sure everything was right. Then I made the final one out of teak. It came out great...I don't know what happened to my pics of it, but if you are interested in seeing, let me know and I will see if I can get them posted again. For my two cents in what prockvoan said about heavy seas and a heavy anchor...sure the pulpit doesn't like it-if it's not built right. I've had mine on for several months and have taken some VERY heavy seas with no problems at all. The trick is in the length of the pulpit and having an inline tensioner. I wouldn't be scared to try it out if I was you. I love the extra space that I have now that the milk crate and anchor are out of my cabin! It looks kinda sexy on the bow too...LMAO!

BoatDrinks,

I'd love to see some pics.

Helped my father-in-law replace a teak anchor pulpit on a Marine Trader years ago. We jazzed with the original design a bit and went to work cutting a new one. Still in service today. BTW - your mention of a tensioner is right on. I consider it a must.

Considering teak's cost these days, I'll probably go with glass. I have a good anount of mat left over from restoring a '72 Grady so my out of pockets shouldn't be too bad.

My biggest concern, to be honest, is how best to attach it to the cabin roof. I'm guessing thru-bolting with some backing blocks on the inside.

I'll see what I can do for some pics...as for the backing...that was the hardest part for me. I had to make shims out of hardwood to make an area big enough for a piece of stainless steel (6" x 10"). You would be amazed at how many angles there are on a boat...I was. It looked relatively flat but I was wrong there! The backing is VERY important...with that and a tensioner there will be no problems!

Will...I also got some trim tabs installed...I don't know if I told you already or not...but I got a set of Bennett 18x9's on the rear now. WHAT a difference! Especially in heavy seas...WOW!
