Has anyone any experience in repairing spider cracks in the gel coat by coating with epoxy? West System says you can repair gel coat blisters by coating with epoxy and barrier coat additive. Anybody try this? I want to paint the bottom of my boat but am concerned that these fine cracks may come through the new paint.

Not what I wanted to read bigboy!!! How about Gluvit? Any good or bad news using that? I realize we're having trouble keeping foam on a space shuttle but there must be something that'll stick to the bottom of my boat at 35mph.

ClassicBoater,

I had similar problem, West Systems had a $4.95 repaire guide (several years ago), the recommendation was to grind them out.

They will continue to radiate if you don't remove them. Grind them out, bevel the edges, then use epoxy and thickener to fill the void sand smooth and then paint.

Peace.

Ed.

Tried to help. Glass a mat polyester over it and than grind that out. I can't be that difficult to remove them just try to do some things. Don't be scared and just play with it.

Re: Repairing Spider Cracks

Just repaired all of my spider cracks this sring. Use a rot zipper and grind cracks to the bottom of the gel coat. By two part gelcoat at any marine store. Clean grinded area with acetone. Fill cracks to above finished surface. Sand with alteast three grits of paper. I started with 150.Use emory paper. When repair is complete, polish and wax unpainted areas or paint below hull areas. You can tint the gelcoat to match your hull if you are not painting. My repair took time but it looks great. I used blue masking tape to isolate the repair areas.

Get a copy of the video Cosmetic Gelcoat & Fiberglass Repair Vol 2 - great tape

Here is a basic overview

Grind out the stress crack (he shows you how and how to know you've got it all - he uses an electric die grinder with a carbide bit but also shows you how to do it with a drill) According to Jerry (the guy) every stress crack extends down into the fiberglass and you have to make sure you've got it all or it will return (he uses acetone and any white spots are areas that have to be removed)

Fill with a milled fiber based filler or, in some cases, a cats hair based filler (depends on size and depth)

When it begins to harden you use a cheese grater (stanley sureform) to take down the high spots, shape it, etc. If you wait till it hardens you'll be sanding forever because it gets as hard as a rock.

Use faring compound to get finished, smooth repair. sand, then spray with gelcoat to finish (use a cheapo airbrush - it works great). Spray with PVA so the gelcoat will cure (assuming you are using wax free gelcoat)

Wet sand and buff...
