has anyone used any of the rot repair products for localized rotting?... The ones i mean require holes drilled and this stuff soaks in to the crappy wood, making all of the worlds problems go away. do they work? How do they work? are they strong? how long do the worlds problems stay away for. appreciate any and everyones input.

brine

Re: rot stopper

I have used "Get Rot" or maybe it was "Git-Rot" on my boat last summer and to be honest was surprised that it worked as well as it did. I have a Century with a 454 V-drive. The Lag bolts for the engine and tranny mounts were in rotted stringers. I did exactly what the directions said and it worked. I have put over 60 hours on boat since I used the get rot and the lag bolts are still tight. I still feel it is a Temp repair and plan on replacing the stringers this winter But the stuff has worked and engine mount bolts stayed tight since last summer and are still tight.

Re: rot stopper

I used a product called rock hard to repair a sill on a window. Sold the house and the person who bought it said it came out in one piece, along with the rest of the window, when it was replaced.
Not sure about Get or git-rot.

Re: rot stopper

I have tried Get Rot and found it to be useless. You are just filling the rotten cavities with epoxy. The epoxy is not absorbed into the "good" wood and it does not stop the rot. It seems to as the cavity is filled.

I have read and have limited experience with using automotive antifreeze to kill the rot. Rot is a fungus that attacks whe fiber cells in wood and the anti freeze kills it. I applied this to an area of an outside countertop about a year ago (I injected it with a huge hypodermic needle) and have not seen a progression of the rot.

The only true long term fix is to get the rot out and replace the rotten wood with new.

What is rotting in your boat?

SoLittle- where did you get the huge hypodermic needle and how big is it (length of needle, amount of liquid the cylinder holds)?
