Mark, I see you put air holes in so she can breathe. You could have also filled the rest of the voids with 2# pour-in foam, just in case she falls off the truck. Chief ;)
Good luck, hope she comes back in good order.

Re: My baby's leaving home... 10/13/05 update

Water got in motor and top cylinder is badly scored. Compression down to 30psi from 140. Both cylinders show water damage. I have drained the carbs, the fuel line, checked the vro tank and gas tank. I can't find water anywhere. Even the new fuel filter is clean as a whistle. And the fuel in the carbs is colored by the oil, so the VRO was still pumping away. The only clue I have is that one head bolt on each cylinder has corrosion on the shaft of the bolt where it passes through the gasket. Also shows some rust and blistered paint on head of both bolts. I am guessing that the head gasket started to leak because it started to idle rough on the previous two trips, then started to run warm on last trip (122*, not really hot, and not hot enough to trip alarm, but hotter than normal) so I removed the thermostat thinking it was not opening full because it was still pumping water great but the temp was up about 15* higher than normal. Temp dropped and I headed back to marina at 1/2 throttle and a few hundred yards away it lost major power and I idled in shaking and rattling. Guess the water steams the wee bit of oil right off the cylinder and friction takes its toll!

I am very annoyed at this "development" because the motor was running so well. I was kicking myself for letting water get in the gas, but I feel vindicated now that I just can't find water anywhere.

Rebuilder said to send him back the fully dressed power head for inspection. Even though it is one year out of warranty, he said they would compensate me if it was a mechanical failure or workmanship issue. I counted the trips we took and estimated the total run time on that motor to be no more than 40 hrs over two seasons.

Anyway, complete rebuild on power head returned fully dressed with rebuilt carbs is $1150. The shipping was more than expected, the box weighs 105 lbs, plus a $5 extra handling charge for wood crate (can you believe that?). Total shipping one way......$88 bucks from NJ to western PA. Ouch! (Same box, if it weighed 75lbs would be $39, UPS really sticks you for the extra 30 lbs.)

Luckily for us it died toward the end of vacation so we got a week and a half of daily use out of it. I had just raced like crazy to get the convertible top done just for that vacation trip. Wife actually felt bad for me and suggested I get the motor repaired asap and we will work out the money later. (She is such a good wife!) She was really enjoying the boat now that there was a top on it.

If I get the motor back in a week or so, I may have time to break it in on a local lake, then do the Hudson River trip I promissed my God Son and his Dad and brother.

I am learning... the hard way. Next time the motor acts up, I'll just call for a tow and save the rebuild costs.

Chief, I cut and hand fit the 1 1/2" pink foam board in the second picture into the crate. Motor is in there tight. You can see some foam in the hand hole. I hope it doesn't get dropped and split box open. It is insured. Keeping my fingers crossed. :)
Like my packing labels? Made the arrow and glass in MS Paint, then pasted picture into Word for text. Hope they don't get wet or the ink will run worse than Tammy Fay Bakers mascara during a press conference!

could it have been a leak in the head, rather than water in the fuel? Im not familiar with those motors, but mine pulls water, up the leg around the water jacket on the head and out the tell tale. A leak or bad gasket or similar would let water in.

cheers

Thanks to all who "feel my pain". LOL!

Yeah, Tengals, I think it is a leaking head gasket.

Another one of those great mysteries in life....

Re: My baby's leaving home... 10/13/05 update

I spoke to the rebuilder Friday afternoon. They have had the powerhead for a week and said that they are rebuilding it and will run it and try to determine where the water came from. What I thought was interesting was that they didn't just say the carbs were full of water, or the filter was full of water, etc and it was my fault and just pay up. At least I know it was nothing I did to feed water into the motor.

They said they will call next week with an update. I will not be surprised if they say they don't know how the water got in. I expect to pay the full rebuild cost because the warrenty has expired, but a break on the price would be nice.

Re: My baby's leaving home... 10/13/05 update

Got an email from BlackBird Ind saying the motor is ready to ship. The parts list reads:

1 rod.
1 set of rod bearings.
1 set wrist pin bearings.
2 pistons
cleaned carbs and fuel system.

Based on the parts list, I assume that both cylinders were bored. It also looks like one rod and/or bearings took a beating too.

They said there was water in the motor, but not specific. So I'm going to syphon the gas tank dry and start over again with fresh fuel to break it in on. Also adding an inline water filter and water trap for tank vent.

Normally they charge $1200 for a twin rebuild, but this repair was done for $750, giving me a break because of the low hours on the motor even though its out of warrentee.

Well, now I just wait for the post office to deliver payment and UPS to bring back the power head. I hope it makes it back home undamaged.

you have to have a lil seperation anxiety by now huh. And right near the end of season. May have the possibility of taking it out again or may not.. May the UPS gods be with you. :)

My experience with shipping heavy stuff is Fed-Ex is less expensive than UPS, and less restrictive. Also, UPS would not deliver anything over 80lbs to a residence, Fed-Ex would. Both couriers have a commercial distribution and a residential distribution. It is always less expensive to receive the stuff via the commercial distribution. That’s why they ask if delivery is to a place of business…businesses being on the commercial routes. The diff in shipping cost can be as much as $30 to $50 on a pair of 4D batteries, just to have them delivered to a business a couple blocks away.

Hey EZ, that's a good one!

Shorty, we have been having some serious rain this past week. Lots of places are flooded. My house is still dry. Took the opportunity to unplug the 110v sump pump and let the battery backup pump have a go at it (watchdog brand). It ran for 6 hours and showed no signs of running down. I did get the bigger deep cycle battery. But when I went to bed I plugged in the regular 110v pump for piece of mind. By morning, the sump was empty.

18rabbit, I asked for home delivery because last time they shipped me the outboard to a fed ex freight depot, I had to drive an hour to get it.
