i have a 1974 glassmaster 15foot trihull and i am about to replace the flooring in it due to some rot it has the original non skid floor covering . after i replace the floor i need to know what would be best to cover it with. i checked and found a product called marideck it's a replacement flooring for the original and i was wondering if i should just install marine carpet instead. and someone told me that maybe i could have someone spray rhino liner in it because its very durible and can be sprayed in a variaty of colors. let me know what you all think. sprayon liner, carpet or marideck flooring.

sprayon liner,would be awesome
carpet, OK but hard to maintain and will hold water if gets wet
marideck flooring, sorry, never herd of it
after you fix the floor you should cover the whole floor with glass before you do anything. :)

Re: FLOOR COVERING FOR 74 GLASSMASTER

thanks f_inscreenname. i was planning on glassing the floor over before covering it, and your right i think the sprayon liner would be the best way to go . as for as the marideck it's looks just like vinyl flooring and it glue's down the same way and is only a little over a couple hundred dollars then you have to buy the glue and have it put down. im not sure how much the sprayon is going to cost me but it will be well worth it to me in the long run. i appreciate all the help this forum gives me and when i start with the boat i will take some before and after photo's and post them .

Re: FLOOR COVERING FOR 74 GLASSMASTER

I am in the middle of replacing the floor in a 1973 17' Glassmaster. The original coating is blue with white speckle gelcoat applied over fiberglass. I am applying gelcoat with a roller to finish the floor. I am using a wax additive with the gelcoat to keep it from curing to a tacky surface.

Re: FLOOR COVERING FOR 74 GLASSMASTER

All of my materials were purchased from www.uscomposites.com

The gelcoat is around $30 per gallon. I foresee using 1.5 gallons. I also purchased blue tint ($5.00) to match the original interior coating. Some wax ($5.00) will be added to the gelcoat to allow it to cure without a tacky surface. I've done this job before by simply rolling it on with a roller.

I'll let you know how it goes when I finish the project in a couple of weeks.

BrettNC thanks for the info. could you let me know what part numbers i should be looking at and are you looking in the polyester resins and gelcoat section on the web site you gave me? i may go with this so if you dont mind maybe you can post some pictures of your boat after you finish. do you think it will be slip resistent? thanks for your help with this.

The only thing you need to do to make paint slip resistant is to add some sand to one coat. You can buy paint with sand in it. I had a bit of that, and used it for a couple of boats, and it worked fine. I'd not be against just adding some playground sand to a quart of paint. After you put that coat down and it dries, you can put down another coat or two of straight paint to seal it. I see no reason why this wouldn't work with gelcoat, as well.

tlwilkes The Grizzly Grip is made by a company called Midwest Chemicals you can contact them they are very helpfull. The product they make is for ships etc its a very coarse rubber liner that bonds well with almost anything. its a simple tip/roll process to do my whole deck ran me about 120.00 including rollers brushes and the uv additive.
www.midwestchemicals.com

The gelcoat or anti slip paint works just as good it just forms a rock solid finish. I went with the rubbery texture feels better to stand on for hours of fishing :)
good luck
Garrett

Re: FLOOR COVERING FOR 74 GLASSMASTER

garrett61, I looked at the web site and i realy like this product thanks for the information on it. Me and my son started tearing out the old floor yesterday and found the stringers to be in great shape considering the age of the boat. We are going to try to work on it every weekend and maybe some nights during the week . I will try to get some pictures on here as we progress. Oh and by the way the flooring seems to be 1/4inch thick would you recommend going thicker or staying with the correct size? any help on this floor replacement would be appreciated. thanks.

Re: FLOOR COVERING FOR 74 GLASSMASTER

I went thicker myself tlwikes i went with 1/2 ab fir.
With the grizzly grip if you email them they answer promtly and will send you samples if youd like to try an area first.
My recomendation is go with the coarse rubber with the UV additive. If you plan on keeping the boat and doing lots of fishing/boating they reccomend 2 medium coatsit should outlast the boat.
You get 60 sq feet out of one gallon with 2 coats.
i have about 30 pics of my restoration already this site has been great all the members help alot brilliant idea.
you can mail me at garrette@cox.net if youd like some pictures or have any question
Garrett
