The boat up for restoration is a 24' Stamas about 3500 lbs. The hull is fiberglass. There's no engine (i/o).

This is my first shot and the boats Last Chance at a new life. I basiclly have just the hull. I have to redo all the controls ect. I want to restore the vessel to it's original glory (cosmetic work). But I can't find parts for it.

The hull seems to be very solid, it doesn't have any hull damage and there is no rotten wood from what I can see. I am going to redo the bulkheads, how do I go about doing this? The previous owner had a 351 ford in it. The recommended hp is 250-300. Any recommendation?

I have never had a boat before let alone a project boat. What should I be aware of in this old a vessel? Any information give will be greatly apperciated. Thanks in advance.

Here's a link to a site that is dedicated to the restoration of Last Chance.

http://home.earthlink.net/~shymeenb/

Re: Restoration of a 1977 24' Satmas.

Welcome to iboats!

There are lot of good folks on this site that are very generous with their time and advise.

It sounds like you have a project on your hands.

The first thing I would do is to take a serious of pictures of the boat. Post them here with your thoughts and then see what everyone has to say. It is hard to give you any useful advise from your initial description.

There are a large number of boat restoration/rebuilding threads available here.

Good luck with your project and I look forward to seeing the pictures.

Dan

Twhitfield,

Nice looking boat. You and your brother will have a great experience refitting her and will learn a wealth of info along the way. Some will probably be the hard way, if your anything like me. I'm currently working on my fifth restoration, and by far the largest in terms of amount of work needed. I too found a boat that was in need of a "Last Chance". Good name by the way. Keep us all posted on your progress.

Before you do anything, start reading up on repair techniques and look through this site and others for topics where others have documented their rebuilds.

In addition to this site, a good place to start is to look at the free information on the major epoxy manufacturer's websites.

http://www.westsystem.com/

http://www.systemthree.com/

http://www.masepoxies.com/

In their free booklets or the projects listed on their websites one can begin to learn some of the repair techniques.

Also look at your local library for boat repair books.

The other thing I would do would be to have a knowledgable friend go through the boat with you a look for issue that may need repair.

Good luck with the project and feel free to post questions.

Dan

Don,

Thanks for the links. They are very helpful. I plan on get a survey done on the boat before I sink any money into it.

Tremayne

Re: Restoration of a 1977 24' Satmas.

Your first area of concern should be stringers and transom. Check them for rot and replace as needed. Your pictures don't show if you still have the transom mount for an outdrive unit. You will have to match your engine to an existing unit or you will have to replace the entire propulsion system. Get a shop manual relevant to the engine you use. That manual should have an entire wiring diagram for the engine and gauge sending units. Few manufacturers use proprietary parts, there is almost always a third party maker for the parts. Windshields and windshield parts seem to be the exception.

TWhitfield take dan's advise, you cannot take to many pics.I would never have finished my 1st project if I hadnot taken 4 rolls of film to refer to. that really helps.let me know how things are going.
