First time boater and poster here. Bought a 1975 Newman Plaville for cheap cause it had the 302 V8 and I'm a classic Ford engine guy. Don't know a darn thing about the MC-1 stern drive so I got a service manual and I'm trying to learn. Of course the drive needs work. There was a little water in the drive when I drained the oil. After I removed the drive I found the U-joint rusted. When I reached in to examine the bellows area I accidentally pulled the Gimbal bearing and it came out by hand. Its rusted tight. I cleaned up the bearing area afraid that I was going to find it was all tore up. It actually looks fine but I am confused because It doesn't look like the service manual. There is what appears to be a large bearing race/retainer with a heavy snap ring. The manual doesn't mention anything about a snap ring. There is no way a new bearing would go into the retainer without the retainer coming out first. Could the bearing have been installed incorrectly? Can anyone explain how a new bearing goes in because it doesn't match the manual? Do I need to remove the snap ring and pull out the retainer with a slide hammer? I cant get it to let me post a picture. Thanks in Advance! John S.
