I used glassfibre (chopped) with resin to install my bilge pump which was mounted on a piece of ply, this was done after purchasing the boat early September 05, all was well untill today when I inspected the interior for water , the glassfibre has now turned white, there was water (condensate from cover) near the glassfibre, It will be easy to remove the ply with pump attached and re-install with epoxy, but what has caused the chopped glassfibre to turn white? It looks as though it is not keyed to the floor and could be lifted easy, what did I do wrong? Thanks for any help! J B D

Re: White Glassfibre resin!

First guess would be impurities on the surface that you affixed the ply to. As to resin turning milky white, I don't know.

if it milked out its because it neber set properly. this could be just a surface condition if you used laminating resin and no wax/air barrier when topcoating.

Well It was the chopped kind and is pink in colour and remained that after installing ply plate but it looks as though the water has done somthing to it, but now that I think about it I only wiped the floor with clean cloths and may have some impurity on it, I'll lift it out and start again using epoxy JBD

Are you talking about pink house insulation? That won't work well to begin with. It sounds like water turned it white. Skip the resins, clean the floor up with some alchohol or acetone and glue the ply down with some boat caulk like 5200 or something. Sam

There's your answer.........

Without Proper Surface Prep,....... Aka,... Sanding.........

Polyester resin,... or for that matter,. Epoxy resin just Won't Stick ............. ;)

Thanks for help, I thought that due to the difficulty of working with the resin, how sticky is was to apply I considered it would adhere to anything and I wiped the entire area clean but didn't abrade it! now it looks as though a screwdriver put under it would lift it off! (which I intend to do) What is best way to fix bilge pump to floor by ply or thin paxolin? if I raise the level of pump by fitting on thick ply there would need to quite a lot of water before the pump would discharge it due to floor being almost flat and height of pump intake. if you wanna glue the bildge pump and switch down, use Boat Life! wipe the spot with solvent and rough it up with some 320 grit first, but be warned, it doesnt come off easy.

Re: White Glassfibre resin!

Thanks everyone for help, I am trying to avoid lifting the bilge pump up on a mounting plate as the higher of the floor the pump is the more water would need to be there to reach the pump and hence pump it out, I suppose it would be OK to epoxy the pump filter cage direct to the floor, therefore it would pump out even small amounts of water? If you can determine the thickness of the hull at that point (usually pretty thick in the bilge), I'd screw the base down. That's what I did with mine. I used two half inch SS screws, placed diagonally, in the bottom of the pump cradle. Mark and carfully drill two undersize holes in the existing fiberglass then put a dab of 3M 4200 on the tip of the screws to act as a 'loctite' to keep them from backing out.
