[Water Rat]

OK this may be a stupid question. But I am new to boating with an old boat.<br /><br />I would like to recondition my hull, there is significant pitting along the water line since the previous owners never did any maintenance on it. And I don't currently have a trailer.<br /><br />Two Questions, Where is the best place to look for pre-owned trailers to buy. I am in Nevada and am having no luck finding one. They all seem to be on the east coast.<br /><br />Two - Are there hull paints that can be applied with a roller? Or must they be sprayed. I can do the work if I can roll it on but I do not have the facilities to spray, so I would have to have someone else do it for me.<br /><br />Thanks<br /><br />Water Rat

Water Rate,<br /><br />Do a search in this forum on "roll and tip", also go here -> Interlux Paints <br /><br />They are just one of the manufacturers, "roll and Tip" is using a roller to roll out the paint and then using a brush (make sure it is a good one) to brush out the roll mark.<br /><br />Lots of people do this, it can produce some really excellent results.<br /><br />Peace.<br /><br />Ed.

There are quite a few used trailers on ebay but they're scattered all over the 'States. Check with any local boat dealerships and marinas to see if they have any for sale. <br /><br />Welcome to iboats.<br /><br />spots

There seems to be a lot of comments on this roll and tip method, what is curious to me is the type of paint being applied to achieve a true high gloss finish that will not peal. Coming from the automotive indrusrty i can assure you there is no type of paint that is deemed reliable (no peel paint) what ever base that will stand the test of any wear time. However this new gel-coat paint seems to defie all of the norms, when people refer to tip and roll are they all refering to a gel-caot type of paint? As to urthaines unless your a true pro painter stay away. ................;} It seems that if i am reading this right with a bit of sanding and the heavey application of a gel-coat............ a bit of light sanding one can acheive a truly high gloss finish that is long standing and great looking.

I rolled and tipped 2 part international "perfection' Last season, with plenty of prep work. Man, the results got me into 3 issues of Australian POWERBOAT magazine. A great product and with proper preperation and technique you can get a near spray finish with plent of gloss. I fish and ski, 4 times per week in saltwater and so far no problems at all.<br /><br />Cheers

I'm no "pro" and I had good luck with the Interlux Brightsides one-part polyurethane. Rolled on nice and smooth with brilliant color. After one season I have no pealing but I keep her on a trailer not in the water.<br />As the others have said, the most important thing is preperation, preperation, preperation. <br />

Tail Gunner:<br /><br />One can get great results using modern marine paints and the roll and tip application method. For a durable high-gloss finish, you can't beat Interlux Perfection, Awlgrip or Epifanes 2-part linear polyurethanes (LPU). As long as you follow the prep and application process defined by the manufacturer, one will get great results. If a semi-gloss is desired, System Three makes an excellent waterbourne 2-part lpu. <br /><br />As Bekosh shows, one can also get great results from the one-part paints, but one may need to re-paint sooner compared 2-part lpus.

Bekosh, Do you have any more pics of your boat? I didn't know that an old tri-hull boat could look that good. Very nice looking boat!
