THERE ARE MANY DIFFERENT TYPES OF MARINE PLYWOOD INCLUDING PRESSURE TREATED. THE RESOURCES I HAVE CHECKED WITH SAY THERE IS AS MANY AS 19 DIFFERNET MARINE PLYWOODS. MOST PEOPLE USE AN A-C FIR WITH AN EXTERNAL GLUE FOR REPAIR PROJECTS. DO NOT USE PRESSURE TREATED PLYWOOD FROM YOUR LOCAL HOME DEPOT OR LOWES. THIS PLYWOOD HAS THE NEWER PRESSURE TREATING FORMULA OF ACQ. ACQ FORMULA WILL EAT THROUGH MOST FASTENERS AND WILL START TO DELAMINATE IF IT COMES IN CONTACT WITH ANY TYPE OF ALUMINUM. THE REASON ACQ WILL ROT AND REACT WITH CERTAIN FASTENERS IS BECAUSE OF ITS HIGH ACIDIC PH LEVEL IN THE FORMULA. THE ONLY FASTENERS THAT CAN USED ARE STAINLESS STEEL AND HOT DIPPED GALVINIZED. THIS PLYWOOD SOLD AT HOME DEPOT IS A VERY LOW QUALITY CDX GRADE WITH NUMEROUS KNOTS AND IMPERFECTIONS, IT IS ALSO VERY UNSTABLE AND CAN WARP VERY BADLY EVEN WHEN FASTENED DOWN. ANYONE WHO HAS USED THIS PLYWOOD ON THERE BOAT FOR DECKING OR REFITTING COULD BE IN FOR A RUDE AWAKING. HOME DEPOT HAS INFORMATION ABOUT ACQ PRESSURE TREATED LUMBER AVAILIBLE USUALLY ON ITS LUMBER STORAGE RACKS. MOST PONTOON MAUFACTURES USE AN CCA PRESSURE TREATED A-C PLYWOOD FOR THERE DECKING. THE EPA ALLOWS CERTAIN USES OF THE OLDER CCA FORMULA IN MARINE AND BOAT CONTRUCTION APPLICATIONS. CCA WAS TAKEN OFF THE RETAIL MARKET IN 2004 DUE TO CONCERNS OF ARCENIC CONTAMINATION IN PEOPLE AND SOILS. THIS A-C PLYWOOD IS SANDED TO PERFECTION ON ONE SIDE AND HAS ALL KNOT REMOVED. IT IS ALSO DOUBLE KILN DRIED TO ADD STABLITY AGAINIST WARPAGE. THE COST FOR A 4*8 SHEET RANGES FROM 65 TO 90 WITHOUT THE COST OF SHIPPING AND TAX . THE CHEAPEST I HAVE FOUND WAS AT PONTOONSTUFF.COM FOR $65.00.

RICK THE PLYWOOD CCA A-C PLYWOOD I NEEDED FOR A PONTOON RESTORATION I A DOING ON CHAUTUAQUA LAKE, I BOUGHT DOWN IN FLORIDA WHEN I WAS DOWN THERE ON A FISHING TRIP. I LOADED ON MY TRUCK AND DROVE 1500 MILES WITH BACK HERE. I WOULD SAY IT WAS AN INTERESTING TRIP TO SAY THE LEAST. I ALSO BOUGHT NEW STEERING COMPONETES AND SEVERAL OTHER THINGS NEEDED TO FINISH THE RESTORATION. I WENT TO SEVERAL MARINE SURPLUS CENTERS DOWN THERE AND I WAS HEAVEN.

Re: MARINE PLYWOOD INFO

Please excuse the long post, I'm reposting what was already said in another language. I stopped reading the previous post at THERE  I do have an aluminum haul boat that needs a corner of transom replaced and was planning on using treated plywood then epoxy it in place. I couldn’t make out what the man was getting at but didn’t like some of the words in his post so I used my word processing program to try and clear it up a little, it’s amazing how far computers have come these days ain’t it?

There are many different types of marine plywood including pressure treated. The resources I have checked with say there are 19 different marine plywood. Most people use an a-c fir with external glue for repair projects. Do not use pressure treated plywood from your local Home Depot or Lowe’s. This plywood has the newer pressure treating formula of ACQ. ACQ formula will eat through most fasteners and will start to delaminate if it comes in contact with any type of aluminum. The reason ACQ will rot and react with certain fasteners is because of its high acidic ph level in the formula. The only fasteners that can be used are stainless steel and hot dipped galvanized. This plywood sold at Home Depot is a very low quality CDX grade with numerous knots and imperfections, it is also very unstable and can warp very badly even when fastened down. Anyone who has used this plywood on his or her boat for decking or refitting could be in for a rude awaking. Home depot has information about ACQ pressure treated lumber available usually on its lumber storage racks. Most pontoon manufactures use a CCA pressure treated a-c plywood for their decking. The EPA allows certain uses of the older CCA formula in marine and boat construction applications. CCA was taken off the retail market in 2004 due to concerns of arsenic contamination in people and soils. This a-c plywood is sanded to perfection on one side and has all knots removed. It is also double kiln dried to add stability against warping. The cost for a 4*8 sheet ranges from 65 to 90 without the cost of shipping and tax. The cheapest I have found was at pontoonstuff.com for $65.00.

New York is a little different from where I live, but we must at least try and get along with each other, without all the money New Yorkers spend down here Florida it would not be the tropical paradise it is today. So, no offence to you Troy. Now for my question, can today’s treated lumber be used up against my aluminum haul? If I put a thin piece of stainless behind it to keep it away from the aluminum would that do the trick? What's this a-c fir he's referring to? I hate to spend 65 bucks to get about a 1’x1’ piece of lumber to patch my transom, any suggestions would be appreciated.

Re: MARINE PLYWOOD INFO

I may have a 1'*1' piece of western fir plywood left, I just did my transom with it. It is 3/4 inch thick. If you pay for shipping i'd be more than happy to get it out to ya, its just sitting in my basement now.
