I bought a 1969 Cruisers 22' last fall that we are anxious to get in the water. <br />The boat sat unused for a while. The engine was rebuilt 3 years ago and supposed to have around 300 hours on it. When I got it home, I discovered that it was locked up. Once I took it out and put it on the engine stand, I was able to free it up. My plan is a tear down to make sure there are no broken rings, etc.<br />The boat is good condition, but needs cleaning and should be repainted.<br />New upholstry on the seats and it has a new cover (I don't know it this is called a bimini cover).<br />This wil be my (our) first big boat and we hope to have alot of fun with it.<br />Once I figure out how to post pics, I will do so.<br />If there are any present or past Cruisers owners out there, drop me line.

yeah, from the sticker it hasn't been in the water in 3 years. be sure to kill that rust on the trailer. will be a nice project. what the power plant.

It has a Mercruiser 160. It came with an HEI GM distributor which I am replacing with the standard point-type distributor. I was told the set up was non complaint with Coast Guard as the distributor wasn't marine type. <br />I am also removing the electric fuel pump that was installed to help get the fuel to the aftermarket mechanical pump. So now I need to purchase the correct fuel pump for the engine.<br />Other than that, a new paint job and a thorough cleaning and should be "good to go".<br /><br />Yeah, the trailer in nasty! But, I have a slip available and once the boat is in the water, I plan on sand-blasting the trailer and re-painting. I also have another set of mounted tires to replace the ones that are on the trailer now.<br /><br />Pretty excited to get started but will need to draw from the experts on this forum for advice on how to's and why do's. <br /><br />Also will be posting a couple of other pics.

I wouldn't be in a huge hurry to go back to points. What makes a marine distributor a marine distributor is it's ability to keep from igniting fuel vapor. That is accomplished by the elimination of the vents and gaps that would allow vaopr in and spark out. If I were you, I would go about replacing the cap with a marine type cap that lack vents and see if there is any other gaps in the distributor housing, or see if you can get a marine HEI distributor. The other option is getting a points housing and cap, and installing a Pertronix electronic ignition conversion kit. I would just avoid points if possible.<br /><br />The engine was most likely locked up due to a lack of proper storage prep. You end up with a skim of rust in the cylinders that freeze the rings in place. Sometimes just putting some penetrant in the cylinders and allowing them to soak, then some oil and a breaker bar and some slow pressure often times frees the engine up. tearing it down isn't a bad thing to do either, but freeing up the motor and doing a compression check might save you a bit of work.
