I have got an '81 21' trophy hardtop cuddy cabin that has serious rot problems. I have ordered the 1.5oz mat and the 18oz woven from us composites as well as 5 gallons of epoxy resin. should be delivered this week. my question is, is this enough material to do the transom and stringers? They have a 14 day turn around time from order the arrival so if I need more then I need to order it tommorrow. pics are in the share a project link.

thanks
lingcod
http://www.shareaproject.com/pages/projectTut,p,199,00.html

Don't know how much cloth you ordered, but my guess is that you will need more resin (probably another 5 gallons).

Just for the transom you'll use 5 gallons. And lots of 1.5oz mat and the 18oz roven woven.

as far as the cloth goes, I ordered 10 yds each of the mat 38" wide, and the woven 50" wide. who locally would sell epoxy resin and cloth?

There is a place in washington with decent prices on epoxy resins www.fiberglasssupply.com.

It's not just 1-2 or two layers of glass. You will need more of both.

Many places in Seattle sell it, Fiberlay, West Marine, Boaters World, Rev Chem, Fiberglass Mart,...etc.

You'll will get ripped off at West Marine, Boaters World....etc.

Try a local search first for some composite supply stores. Some arts and crafts stores carry the stuff, just make sure it's laminating resin.

All that epoxy is going to add up quick. All boats are build with polyester resin, you could go that route and save tons of $$$$. Vinylester is a bit better than polyester and still tons cheaper than epoxy.

The project I am working on now, I got 10 gallons of vinylester resin + hardener for $300.

I agree with going the polyester or VE way, but he already has the epoxy, or at least it's on the way. Many places do charge more, but when you need a small amount fast to finish a job, the extra cost may be worth it.

ok, i ordered more resin from us composites. their price was $209.00 for 5 gallons with hardener. two local outfits were.
1)fiberlay- $487.75 for 5 gallons and hardener
2) spectrum gelcoats- $243.33 per gallon with hardener. that is $1216.65 for 5 gallons.

easy choice to go back to us composites. I can see why people don't use epoxy cuz I would't have either if I had buy it locally.

thank god for the internet.

I just went to us composites website. some good prices. That is the cheapest epoxy resin I've ever seen. Let us know how it is to work with.

Did you order more glass?

Epoxy has far better bonding properties than ester resins do, making it more suitable for repairs. Also, the less resin you use the better.. you want to fully wet the glass and then remove as much resin as you can without drying the glass. this will give you the strongest layup. was that 10 sq. yards or ten yards off the roll (usually 52" wide if I remember right) I think your gonna need more glass

it is 10 yds off the roll. I already have 10 yards of each coming so this will give me 20 yards of each.

Are those prices right?? OUCH!! double OUCH!!
Any boat companies nearby?
Most will sell you any supplies you need if you'll be nice and not aggrivate them with hundreds of questions. (just don't be a pain...lol)
Cost should be $1.85 to $2.00/lb.
That's how all boat builders that I know calculate their costs and sell their supplies.
By the lb.

My last check for 5 gallons of epoxy, hardner, and mat was $98.00. ($1.85/lb)

$98.00 for 5 gallons is an extremly good price compared with what I have been finding around here. didn't check any boat builders just the two shops I mentioned above. after those prices were given to me, I immediatly went to US Composites and ordered what I needed. your price is less than half of what I paid. where are you getting your quotes from?

Re: restoring an old bayliner trophy.

The fiberglass can be purchased by the pound if you are buying an entire roll. $1.85 pound sounds about right for the 18oz roven woven. It less for some glass mat and more for the biaxial and double bias fabrics.

I've never seen resins sold by the pound. Not even from distributors. They sell it by the 55 gallon drum.

Re: restoring an old bayliner trophy.

I buy it from a boat builder, or, if they are not there, I go to another boat builder. (there are several in the area).
It's ALL $1.85 to $2.00lb. If they used peanuts in boats, they'd sell em by the lb or calculate their costs by the lb.
Resin, Hardner, Mat, or even a whole boat...by the lb.

One of the owners of one of these companies got on a Canoe kick a couple of years ago. Built a mold for a canoe and built himself one.
If you wanted a canoe...it was $1.80lb.

Re: restoring an old bayliner trophy.

my 5 gallons of resin arrived today as well as the mat and cloth. the project is moving right along (at a snails pace.) I think that if I had it to do over again I would use poly instead of epoxy. at least with poly you can lay multiple layers of glass whereas with the epoxy you have to wait for it to gel up before you can lay the next layer. this is taking about 4 hours between coats, 4 coats per stringer, this is taking FOREVER. I tried warming the resin in warm water but all I ended up with was a smoking jar of resin in about 15 minutes. one other thing that is slowing me down is that I cut my wood too tight, not allowing for enough room for the glass buildup. OH WELL beginners mistake. hope to have new pics up tomorrow sometime.
