I have taken the boat apart and discovered that instead of wood stringers they are fiberglass. I am assuming that I need to grind, cut, hack these old stringers off and replace with wood stringers. Any advice? Thanks.

PS) How the heck are you guys able to get your pictures into your posts? I keep trying to paste them but no luck.

Re: Fibergalss Stringers

Why do you want to remove them and put in wood?

They are all cut up and appear as though they has foam blown into them at one time. I don't really want to replace them but thought I had to. If I could figure out how to post the pictures you could take a look and let me know if I am going to be lucky enough to not have to replace them. Thanks for the super speedy response.

I was afraid you were going to say that. Should I just remake them using wood and if so do I need to treat the wood with waterproof sealant? Again, any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Re: Fibergalss Stringers

Okay guys (or girls), Here are the stringers with the foam removed. Needless to say, I was not expecting glass stringers and foam when I removed the floor. The foam was in all eight compartments (each side next to the beam)and was also soggy. I had to vacuum up a good bit of water. My questions are: How should I replace the stringers? Wood? Reglass? And two, why was there so much foam in the boat? There was nowhere for the water to escape. Thoughts? Explnations? Advice? Definitely advice.

Thanks

Ron
It Probably was just That for atleast a Few Years............

Before We can give you Good Ideas,+ Good Advise,........
We've got to know What you want It to be when you're Done...........

I don't Think that I would go back with the Same Design,......Maybe......

I'll try....I really haven't figured photobucket out quite yet. Sorry about that...gives me a headache just looking at it that size..actually, it really gives me a heasace looking at it in my backyard.

What do I want it to be? I want it to be a $20,000 Boston Whaler. Wife put the kibosh on that idea.

Seriously, I'm not sure what you mean by that question. The boat will be used mostly for bass fishing. Would it help if a post a picture of the original boat in all its glory?

Trust me, I bought a trailer, trolling motor, and some accessories cheap. The boat was free- that's the way I'm looking at it.

Thanks Bondo.

Ron

Re: Fibergalss Stringers

Does anyone have any ideas about how to create new stringers? A diagram or some photos would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

the standard method is to lay up over cardboard forms. saturating the cardboard makes it waterproof as well. mailing tubes of various diameters is a popular way to do it as well.

Re: Fibergalss Stringers

shattered glass,

I have had good luck building forms out of cardboard or luan plywood. I then cover the form with plastic (heavy dropcloth plastic), fiberglass does not stick to it.

I then layed up 1 layer of glass and let it harden, removed from boat, removed from form. This gave me the glass shape I needed to complete the glassing. It fits back into the spot it came from perfectly. You can then use some thickend resing to hold it in place and glass over the whole thing.

I just did this with fitting a fiberglass hatch, I lined the opening with platic and layed up the glass. Once set I could remove it from both the boat and the form.

Basically, wherever you don't want the glass to stick, put the plastic. This works great for rough forms, and by no means works for finished molds, there are imperfections where the plastic was folded or crinkled.

Picture, cardboard duct taped together, in the shape you want, even taped to the boat, covered in thick plastic, then glassed, so no glass or resin touches the boat, only the plastic.

I have even used packing tape to hold everything down, since it is plastic fiberglass won't stick to it.

Try it on a small piece, and you will see what I mean.

Hope this helps.

Peace.

Ed.

Thanks Ed and Scrumbler. I'll take your advice. Hopefully, I get some good weather this week to try your solutions. I'll keep you posted - because I'm going to need more of your advice in the near future.

Ron

Re: Fibergalss Stringers

OOPS! Forgot to ask, Some of these stringers were filled with foam...I think all of them were supposed to be. Do I need to refill after I produce new stringers? If yes, how? Also, with foam being present in all of the compartments, there did not seem to be anywhere for water to go - it just saturated the foam. Do I go ahead and refoam these compartments or is there a better solution.

The transom is fried as well. should I replace the transom before or after I cut the original stringers out?

Thanks

Ron

Ron - I would do the transom first so that when you do the stringers you can bond them to the new transom.

I'll leave the advice on the stringers to others but it would help them if you could post some more pictures and tell us how long this boat is.

Re: Fibergalss Stringers

someone on here has done a proper drainage system under the foam, I can't find the project right now, but someone will chime in with a link.

you foam the stringers through holes drilled in the top that are covered when the floor is bonded down.

definitly tackle the transom first, then worry about the stringers and bulkheads once the plug is back in ship shape

The boat is 16 feet long. Here are some pictures of the boat with its lid on. The two "wings", not sure of the correct terminology" on back are foam filled as well.

Just removed the transom... soggy and stunk terribly of gas.
Thanks Scrumbler...I'm sure I read that post you are referring to. Didn't it have something to do with PVC pipe. I can't find it nor remember how it was done.

Ron
