Last season My oil filter came loose and sprayed oil on the inside of my engine hatch and it leaked onto the carpet and disolved the glue. The carpet is now bubbled up and is starting to fall apart in just one small area right in front of the hatch. I was just wondering if anyone has tried to replace just a small section of carpet with vinyl, and how to cover the seams where the carpet and vinyl meet. another issue I have is the hatch bottom is attached to alot of things and it is on top of the existing carpet. I dont know if it is worth pulling all of that off. What should I do just butt it against the hatch and back seats or try to slide it under everything which would make it more difficult to glue down. I am not completely sold on this idea any suggestions would be appreciated.

PJ, It might be worth just to remove all the carpet, and replace it with an anti-slip marine vinyl. I did it to my boat, and it looks great. I had to cover an area that was 5'X 9' and cost me 133.00 bucks, and used a water proof rubber adheisive that I bought at Home Depot. To me, carpet is carpet, weather it is in your house, or in your boat, and even though its a marine carpet, it still will retain moisture. The vinyl I put in was one piece, and is glued from the floor, up the sides about 3", making no seam edges, and the water just rolls off, and can be easily dryed off. I comes in different colors. If you want the website I bought the vinyl from, just E-mail me at lovemark89@aol.com If you just want to replace the area that you said, I would do it, and cover the seam with an aluminum carpet stripping, mitreing the corners at 45 degree angles, and screwing it down. As far as the hatch, removing everything is up to you,it all depends on how much time and effort you want to spend making things right.

EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEWWWWWWWWWWWWW!!!!!! is right!

My buddy replaced his carpet with the "HIGH GRADE" marine vinyl. Within a week he'd knicked it with a knife. Yeah, he tried to seal it with 5200 or some other goop, but that stuff is a band-aid-on-a-bullet-wound. (I'm sure his screw holes let water in too) His floor is now rotten.

Had he only glassed it in...

Doing Vinyl flooring and carpet is like riding to the prom in a limo, but then having to walk the last mile.

Why is it "manly" to glass it in? Some people consider spending money and time on their wife and kids to be manly.
