another gel coat question

I'm asking this because I've never used gel coat..

When using gel coat, what is it's consistancy?
For example, is it real thick whereas if you apply it to a non-smooth surface, the gelcoat will fill in the rough spots and will still come out real smooth? Or is it more like paint and the way the gel coat looks is the same shape as whatever you are applying it to.

Does the surface you are applying the gel coat have to be perfectly smooth in order for the gel coat to come out perfectly smooth?

Thank you... so, then I'll make sure that I apply it to a real smooth surface.. I was just seeing how much preparation I was going to need to do..

The Better the beginning surface,.... The Better the Results.......

Even Then,...... You'll need to do some Finish Sanding,+ Buffing,+ Polishing to get it Right.............

Re: another gel coat question

I pulled off a bunch of carpet on the inside walls of my cockpit and want to paint instead of putting carpet back on there... i've gone through a lot of ideas for it, paint, truck bed liner, gel coat...

I was just wondering exactly how smooth the surface had to be before putting on the gel coat (how think gel coat is and if it would fill in rough spots).. I experimented with it yesterday.. gel coat seems to go on about like paint.. maybe a thick paint, but more like paint than putty (as Bondo said)
