Tach is out of wack

I noticed the tach on my 89 Smokercraft was reading 4,000RPM when turned off. Started the engine and that is about where it stayed. When I increase the RPM the tach reads it but at an inrealistic rate (to much). Do you think the tach is bad or something else? All wires appear to be clean and secure.

No problem. Once you confirm the gauge is good you can move on to other areas.
