I have a question that has been bothering me my whole life and never have found out the real answer. My buddy worked at sears as a mechanic for a couple years and he didn't even know the answer........Why is it that you can't put a battery down on the floor? I know that it ruins the battery somehow and drains it. I have to take mine inside the house to charge it and my girlfriend told me to take it off of the dinner table and put it on the floor. I told her that I couldn't, she said put it on the carpet then. I told her that I couldn't..She said "why", and I didn't know and she still thinks that I was F'n with her....Please help me with an answer.....Warren

Temperature diffrence between bottom of battery (in contact with cold concrete floor) and top. This condition causes a battery to self discharge (very slightly) but addes up over time.

Quality supervisor in a battery factory for 6 years.

Major Woods

Good point! I just took my batteries out for the season and took them to their shelf in the basement. Nice and warm there!

Batteries self discharge over time no matter where you store them. As stated in the myths, in the old days before plastic cases batteries would discharge through the case to ground if stored on concrete. It's still important to maintain the charge in a battery in the off season for long life.

It also states that a "colder floor than battery" will slow the natural discharge rate, not increase it.........

I missed that one. I have an old deep cycle battery that has taken up residence on my garage floor for the past 7 or 8 years & it still has a bit of life left. I didn't know I was helping it. I always keep it charged up & filled though .
