Evinrude trolling motor switch wiring?

Greeting all,

I have inherited a 88' stratos 201 pro. :) The scout trolling motor had a DPDT switch that says RUN and CHARGE then a center position of something, maybe OFF, that fed a three prong socket that the motor plugged into. It has the main two battery red+ wires coming to it and an orange+ coming off one leg and a red+ coming off the other leg. The battery- goes to the third post, I think the orange and red hook to the switch somehow along with the other wires, but don't know how. Can anyone tell me how this thing is supposed to be wired? Thanks, Kevin

Re: Evinrude trolling motor switch wiring?

So if I have this straight, you have 3 wires coming out of the trolling motor and 3 wires coming from the battery. The post is a bit confusing. I saw in your other post that you just had 2 Black wires and 2 red wires. Sounds like a 12-24 Volt trolling motor. It can run in either the 12 Volt mode or the 24 volt mode. The orange would be for 24 Volts and the red and black would be 12 Volts. If you have a DPDT switch, that would switch between 12-24 operation.

Re: Evinrude trolling motor switch wiring?

Thanks for the reply rick.
It is a bit hard to explain, I have been told the switch is to move from 12 to 24v. Basically from charging the two batteries to running the trolling motor. I just have to get the wiring down on the switch. Let me try again: coming from the battery to the recepticle, three wires
- and + from one battery to the + and - side of the recepticle.
The + from the 2nd battery to the other side of the recepticle.
The - from the 2nd battery goes to the switch. There is an orange wire coming from one + side of the recepticle.
A red wire from the other + side of the recepticle.
And a blk wire coming from the - side of the recepticle
All these go to the switch as well for a total of 4 wires going to the switch. The switch is a DPDT switch with a jumper on one end across the switch.
The 4 wires are the ones that I don't know where they go.
Like I said the gent's at the stratos dealer know it is used to switch between 12v(charge) and 24v(run). It is definatly a 24v trolling motor, I found out today. hope this helps explain, if i can get an email i can send a drawing that explains it better. thanks again

Re: Evinrude trolling motor switch wiring?

EvilLord....can you find a model number on the trolling motor? May be on the foot control. This switch, is it ON the trolling motor or mounted on the front dash? Your post sounds like it's on the foot control?

Send me the diagram and I will post it so that I and others may help you better. And as OBJ asked, show where these controls are located on the diagram or just tell us. I have a Evinrude trolling motor and the control is in the foot switch, so I assume yours is also. But ultimatly, these lead to the powerhead.

Re: Evinrude trolling motor switch wiring?

Hello,
Long time reader, first time posting but I may be able to help.

I have an '89 Stratos 275 Pro with the same set-up. I believe the switch Evillord is refering to is the bow mounted "Run/Charge" switch. This is used to change the trolling circuit from 24Vdc (Run) to 12Vdc (Charge) at the bow mounted TM receptacle. In the "Charge" positon the TM receptacle has the batteries wired in parallel, in the "Run" position they are wired in series.

Looking at the back of the DPDT switch there should be 6 posts. The red jumper wire goes across the top two posts. The orange wire from the bottom of the TM receptacle goes to the middle left post. The black wire from the second battery goes to the middle right post. The red wire from the top of the TM receptacle goes to the bottom left post. And the black wire from the TM receptacle goes to the bottom right post. Hope this helps.

Re: Evinrude trolling motor switch wiring?

I have that same switch on my 1984 baja and a 12/24 evinrude trolling motor. What does that switch do. I have an onboard 3 bank charger (overkill I know) and I never switch it. It was used in conjunction with a volt meter that was next to it on the bow,for battery one and battery two to see how much of a charge they held. It quit last year.

Re: Evinrude trolling motor switch wiring?

Baha -- if your three bank charger is connected directly to the batteries you don't have to use the Charge/Run switch provided the charger has isolated outputs (meaning the grounds are not common with each other). Some older chargers with multiple outputs did not have isolated grounds so they could not be connected to two 12V batteries wired in series. The charge run switch broke the series connection and made them a parallel connection to enable charging the batteries either through the troller plug or using a single output charger.

Re: Evinrude trolling motor switch wiring?

Good to know. I'm following this because I have a prob. with my omc 12/24 volt TM. I have a similiar set up but not exactly the same. { problem as follows. 12/24 volt Switch on the foot pedal, wont run in 12 but does run in 24 volt position. I don't remember changing any battery connections. I have a drawing of the wires from the batteries to run/charge switch to TM connector to the 12/24 switch in the foot pedal and a little farther to the selector switch. I dont know how they need to be to hooked to the batteries or if the 12/24 switch may be bad. I can send the drawing to anyone who might like to have it. I quess I'm going to also start a new post asking for help?

Re: Evinrude trolling motor switch wiring?

Sorry to post on an old thread, but......
The charge/run switch on my 92 champion needs replaced. McGill sent me specs for a proposed switch, part 08620012. It is a double pole, 3 position. 15A 277 VAC. 3/4 HP 125-277 VAC. They are asking me to confirm the amps. Would this be large enough, or do I need a 30 amp?
24 volt system, Motorguide Brute 42 lbs. dual pro charger.

Thanks for your help.

Re: Evinrude trolling motor switch wiring?

Update for those who may run into the same problem in the future:
I talked to Kevin at Ranger boats (they are making Stratos and Champion Boats now). He said the older boats had everything going through 5/10/15 amp breakers. Nothing was drawing more than that. The McGill 15 amp rocker switch should work just fine and is safe for my application.
