Suggested Gauges?

I've got a '02 21' Wellcraft CC with a '02 Johnson 150. The guages are Farina (sp?) which I've heard aren't very good. The tach has started acting up. It doesn't start working until 1800 rpm. I am planning on replacing it as well as the other guages this fall. What do y'all recommend as a good brand?

Re: Suggested Gauges?

All marine gauges are basically the same Mr. LF. The Faria gauges you have may be of the "wiggler" type which are not as sturdy as the "aircore" meter movement that is more commonly used. The "wiggler" is a less expensive movement to manufacture. Boatbuilders really push the OEM's to bring the prices of accessories down to keep their bottom line low.

Faria, Teleflex, Livorsi(Gaffrig), VDO, SW and Beede all make quality instruments. The key is warranty and service. Check out Beede for this.

Thanks for the info. Gives me a starting place for my research.

I believe Faria will repair or replace your gauge.

They sure will, for the price of a new gauge. That is why I said check the warranties ;)

Guageguy: I may have asked this question before but don't remember if you responded. Does anyone make a marine, indash, 2" hour meter with both a cumulative and resetable scale (like a speedometer trip recorder). I think that these little disposable ones were pointed out but I'm interested in a standard dash guage.

Re: Suggested Gauges?

gaugeguy, are you saying Faria's "limited, transferable, lifetime" warranty is no good? Just wondering as I have a Faria tach, oil pressure, temp, gauge for my new 4-stroke. So far so good, but hope it isn't junk. Thanks

Re: Suggested Gauges?

I'm not saying "no good" JRJ. The reason it is a "lifetime, transferable" warranty is because they have a flat rate fee for every instrument (I think it may be $25) to be repaired or replaced after the first year (a 2" gauge costs about $5 to manufacture).

Faria does make a quality aircore gauge. If you replace a Faria instrument with Faria, make sure you get the aircore and not the "wiggler".

Boomyal, most of the in-dash hourmeters are not resetabble. The 5 major gauge manufactures all purchase, customize and re-sell the 2" hourmeters they (we) sell. Your best bet would be to go to the manufacturers of the hourmeters themselves...Hobbs, ENM and Curtis. One of them probably has what you are looking for.

Re: Suggested Gauges?

I just got off the phone with Faria customer service. They will repair or replace the tach at no cost to me. The only problem is that it will take 5 to 6 weeks. My tach has all the system check warning lights in it. We use the boat a lot and I'm very nervous about running it without the system check. What are y'all's opinions?

You must have talked a good line to them Mr. LF, normally that gauge would have cost you $46.50

I am pretty sure that if you do not have that gauge hooked up and something happens to your engine, the warranty on the engine is voided. So I would be leary of that too. Maybe if you explain that to one of the CSR's at Faria they will ship you out a replacement gauge, bill you for it, and once they recieve your gauge and find it is faulty, credit your account back.

http://faria-instruments.com/site_manuals/Mar_Warr.pdf

Re: Suggested Gauges?

Gaugeguy, I called them again this morning and asked about your suggestion. They agreed to an immediate turn around which is less than a week in their shop they say. I guess I'll try that. We'll be without the boat for 2 weekends but LF can always fish from the dock.

She doesn't want to catch them and has threatened the neighbors with bodily injury if they do. She considers the fish in the lights to be pets. I think she's even named some of them. "Orca" may come up missing one of these nights when I can't sleep. ;)

Thats funny :) But if the boat is down for a couple weekends a couple of the pets may have to get their lips pierced!!

Sounds good so far on Faria. Seems like your boat dealer could help out with a loaner gauge? I know how she feels about pet fish. Get the same way on deer around here....but I like to eat 'em too.

Re: Suggested Gauges?

My boat dealer went bankrupt about 3 months after I bought the boat. The nearest Wellcraft dealer is about 100 miles away and since I've never bought anything from him I doubt he'd be much help.

Wondering if you're happy with the Faria service turnaround and what it cost? Thanks
