Obtained 50 feet of 16 gauge, tinned wire. I am suspicious its not marine qualified other than the tin. Below is the description found on the wire. Can anyone decipher it?

SIFMFNS - S1ENOPYR (N) H X GAF VDF-R - H 110 300

Probably for anti-gravity machines only, huh?

When printing on wire the characters don’t always get fully printed. I’m seeing SIEMENS, manufacturer of a gazillion electrical products. Hopefully someone else will recognize the wire’s insulation code. If not, I’ll email the data to a friend this weekend. They have access to everything electrical in the entire whole entire world…and maybe even on mars, too. Please double check the printing to see if it is possible any part of other characters might be missing.

In general, tinned wire isn’t cheap. You’re sure it’s not aluminum? If it is multi stranded tin coated copper, you are probably ok to use it. My concern would be the insulation but I doubt premium tinned wire would be tossed into low-end insulation. ‘course, I could be wrong.

Re: Wiring Description for Electrical Sleuths

Thanks 18rabbit.

I am unable to obtain any 16 gauge marine type wire where I live. This is all I could find. I have been driving pretty much all day.
Even the boat marina's are out. Hardware stores, Wallyworld-DenofThieves, Tractor Supply, West Marine, Bass Pro World, Electronic supply store, RadioJoke and others.

None, nada zip. I have some red 16 gauge left over I can use, but I prefer black for negative. It just feels wrong putting red on the negative terminals. But when you live in the sticks, sticks are all u got.

This wire I mentioned does have some cryptic characters here and there on it, but I am unable to reproduce them on the keyboard.

Hey, is there any other way to test this wire to see if its not aluminum? If it is copper, I may just use it anyway. I could send it back to my home planet, but that would take 2 weeks. Hope to have the boat finshed in a couple of days.

Looking down into the exposed strands it appears to be red or copper colored. I guess this rules out aluminum. You are right 18rabbit, it does say Siemens. Part of the characters were rubbed off where I was reading it.

Gil...scrape the wire strands. If it's shiney, put a magnet to it. If it attracts, not aluminum. If it stays copper colored...it's copper. No...I don't know the code on it.

Edit: Just talked to a friend that has a code book.....found a couple letters in it but don't make much sense. He said it may be a special made wire for "some" special purpose. Bottom line, still ain't got a clue.

Thanks, OBJ. I did see some red copper color in it. Will try the magnet this morning.

No attraction to a magnet. Isn't copper non ferrous?

Re: Wiring Description for Electrical Sleuths

Copper is non-ferrous. If it is silver on the outside and red on the inside it is the stuff you want. Siemens does not make cheap stuff. Quality all the way. I suspect the wire is perfectly ok for your need but overkill. My friend is in Asia right now but has a laptop. Our Sunday evening is their Monday morning.

How much awg 16 marine grade wire do you need? How big a hurry are you in?

Fwiw, the current wire coloring code for marine dc (-) has changed from black to yellow. That’s why you will find 2 conductor marine cable with one red wire (+) and one yellow wire (-).

Re: Wiring Description for Electrical Sleuths

I actually have been running red and yellow until I did the bilge pump. It was brown and black so I went with that. I did put in the Siemens wire so I am ok for now.

I have a livewell pump to do next, but the wiring for it is already here. Actually turning out pretty well.

Finally getting where I would not be afraid for Law Enforcement to look into the electrical battery compartment. ha ha.

I must confess that I put in a new Rule bilge pump and screwed up when I did the pilot hole thing. Yep. Two of em. Now I have to figure out how to repair those holes from the outside. It never ends. I was so careful not to drill too deeply. But not careful enough. Evidently thats the skinniest part of the hull. At least they are very small diameter holes. And its a fishing skiff, not a fancy shiny boat. I would really have been upset if that were the case. I have lots of scars and battlemarks on her. "So, I shall endeavor to persevere and then declare war upon the Union." (Outlaw Josey Wales)

Hmmm maybe chewing gum.

Well...you can always put in a bilge pump to pump out what the other bilge pump won't......"And ever to perservere". Classic! :)
