I have a MinnKota about 15 years old. In good shape and had been running good. Only used in fresh water. Last time out I ran it and it runs but sound like cards in bike spokes when under way. Only paid $150 for it new. There is a shop about 40 miles away. Would it be worth repairing or better to buy new one?

Hi J....usually when they start clacking like that, the problem is in the lower unit. Dry bearings, maybe water got into it. Parts are farily cheap unless you need a motor stator. Don't know what the shop rate is in your area. Can't hurt to get a estimate though.

J,

I have a slightly differing opinion. It sounds like one of two things.

1) The brushes are worn down so the brush harness is rubbing against the housing.

Solution -open it up and take out the brushes and replace with new ones and she will run like new. $ 10.00 to $15.00 fosters in La.

2) If you hit somthing, it could be that the outer magnet cracked and is rubbing. You can get a new housing for about $20 to 25.

Just my thoughts. Before I went out and bought a new one, i would tear it down (not Hard) and find out what the problem is.

The only bearing is usually a single ball at the end of the shaft. just bube it a little. and the brass bushings are almost contiunous duty so they too shouldn't be bad. But who knows ...could be.

Hope this helps

kid
