I have (2) deep cycle batteries for trolling. I have them under the bow of my boat and they are hard to get to. Question is , How often should I check the water level? I use the boat a few times a week and hook the charger up after each time. How fast does the water evap or what ever it does?

Re: Battery water Question

I have a pair of Group 31 battery on an on-board charger that is plugged in anytime the boat isn't in motion. I have to add water about once every 2 months in the summer but I can get through the winter with just one check - about this time of year after this snow melts would be about right.

Thom

Re: Battery water Question

My batteries are charged with a 40 amp alternator and at home with a 10 amp charger. I fill the batteries 1 time a year in the summer and check them about 3 month later. So far only had to fill one time year. Make sure you do not over fill.

My batteries are mounted in the stern where there is a lot less vibration.

Re: Battery water Question

WHAT I do is as follows : I check the battery electrolite and voltage, before I go out boating.
I also check levels before and after charging and I only use a inteligent charger which monitors battery voltage and only charges when the voltage falls below the required voltage. This type of charger can be left connected to the battery bank permanently and because of the fact that overcharging does not take place, gassing does not occur, thus the level of the electrolite remains pretty constant Please use distilled water only.
regards Willie
