Re: new fish finder

I used 3M 5200, they have it at iboats, West Marine, Academy Sports, BPS, some Walmarts, boat dealers, etc.

The transducer should be even with the bottom of the boat. It (the 'ducer) may have a line around it (mine did) that is supposed to match up with the bottom of the hull. Make sure it's parallel with the waterline. Make sure it has slack in the cable to "kick up" if it hits an obstruction. Make sure there's smooth hull in front of it (no strakes or rivets that might create turbulence while under way). A foot and a half or so either side of the motor to avoid prop wash.

Did I forget anything?

Good job JTexas. I agree but would like to add just a little. Your transducer should be pointed stright down when on the water, not foward or to the rear and not point left or right. Also on a V Hull one side will be farther below the hull than the other. The side closest to the bottom of the hull should have about one half of the transducer below the hull.

One suggestion on mounting. Think about mounting a transducer mounting plate and then screwing your transducer to the plate. The advantage is you do not need any holes in the hull below the water line. Also as you add other gear like a speed sensor or another tranducer you will not need any more holes in the hull.

To see what I mean go to

https://www.Cabelas.com

and at the top left type in

"Transducer mounting plate"

In the keyword search. Then click on the iteam for a detailed view. They also sell them hear but the search is not as easy.

Make sure your transducer is not in a location where it will hit the trailer or your tie down strap. Make sure not to close to the chims or it may not work well at high speed.

I am always in favor of mounting the transducer inside the hull if possible. NO holes to drill. Is your boat solid fibreglass ?

I would not use 3m 5200. 5200 is meant for permanent installations. 4200 is a better choice for something that you may want to remove or replace at some point in the future.
