I have a Motor Guide Tr-109 36 volt trolling motor. Today I hit a stump and bent the shaft. It probally is bent to a 10 degree angle.
Should a person try to straighten this one or should I get a new shaft and put it on? Have never work on a trolling motor before but have knowledge of motors and repairs. Any tricks or advice would be deeply appreciated.
Thank You :)

Re: Bent Shaft on Trolling Motor

You can straighten the shaft to where it will function but may show marking of where it was damaged. Take a piece of heavy angle iron, place shaft in the "V" and pull straight with 2 "c" clamps. You will need to add a shim at the bend so you can overbend slightly because the tube will flex back. Changing to a new shaft is not a problem. Take off gear and bottom half of top housing. Unscrew shaft out of motor. You will need to cut wires in top housing and reconnect when you screw in new shaft. Be sure to apply pipe sealant or teflon tape to threads on motor to insure it will be watertight. The new shaft will make you more satisfied but a lighter in the pocketbook.
