Re: 24v series battery charging

The key words in the product description are "two batteries with a common ground ". If you have two batteries wired in series, they do not have a common ground. This charger will not work for a 24V system.

Water, I appreciate your response, and I see what you mean about the common ground on the Model 2610.I was more referring to the next Model 2611.It says " Charges Group 24 and Group 27 batteries in either series (24 volt) or parallel (12 volt) configurations without charge/run switches - perfect for trolling motor applications. " Unless I'm mistaken it sounds like you don't have to disconnect the series jumper between the batteries.Does that sound feasable,is it recommended to disconnect and charge individually, or should you buy a 24v charger and charge them at the same time. Once again I appreciate everyone's input.

Either way, tho it is preferred to charge batteries the same way they were discharged. To use a 12v charger on each bat means you must connected directly to the battery posts (or at least that continuity). Some folks perfer to have nothing connected to the bats except battery cable.

The 2611 will work just fine, and no, you don't need to remove any cable to use it, the diodes are internal. This type charger works best with 2 batteries of exact age and size, other-wise it will boil one battery more than the other.

Gee, guess I sure blew that one. Back to the real question. In my opinion, if this were a critical application you would get the best and longest service from the batteries if they were individualy charged. Offshore sailboaters routinely "balance and equalize" their batteries by charging them individualy. While charging individually may provide some benefit, for what you are doing, I would go for the 24V charger and skip the hassel of disconnecting things.

As Walleyehed says, the 2611 is designed for 24 systems and will work just fine. It is essentially two independent 10A chargers in a single package. Each set of leads connects to one of the batteries.

Cool thanks for the input guys.Although I'm pretty good at the motor stuff,I'm not as savvy on the fishing options available.

Re: 24v series battery charging

I had the same question. I have a Vector Smart Charger 2/6/12 amp and was wondering if I can leave the batteries wired in series and charge both at the same time by connecting one clip to each battery post? Is this possible?

Electricity is not easily understood by me. Thanks for the help. Matt

Re: 24v series battery charging

Matt -- your charger is 12 volts and cannot charge two 12 volt batteries in series unless you charge each battery individually. You don't have to disconnect them. Just connect the charger to one battery until its charged, then do the other one. The 2/6/12 rating is the output amperage or charging rate of the charger and has nothing to do with its charging voltage.
