Hello, I am new here to iboats. I am trying to find if there is a way to charge my deep cell batteries with no outboard motor?(mine is off the boat trying to get fixed) I keep reading about people doing it from there trucks while they have it on the trailer. how does that work and if someone can explain how it is done? I have 2 batt. wired in parrell for my trolling motor then 1 batt by it self for the electronics, etc.

Re: charging batteries

You can do it from your truck if run a wire from your truck battery thru a fuse or circuit bresker to your trailer plug. Then wire your trailer with a wire from the truck plug to a plug on your boat. Then from the boat plug to your batteries. However this is not a good way to charge your deep cycle batteries. Also useing an outboard to charge deep cycle battery is not a good way to charge. These way can be used to add a little extra power but it takes far too long to do a complete charge.

Get a good automatic charger and charge as soon as you get home. Get at least a 10 amp charger. For parallel batteries if you expect to charge batteries is less than 24 hours then it needs to be at least 15 amps.

Re: charging batteries

MC -- running a wire from the boat to the truck battery may sound like a good idea, but what you are really doing is adding the truck battery to the parallel string in your boat. If you start your truck with that wire connected to the boat, you run the risk of drawing a great deal of current through that small wire unless it has a protection diode (a large one) in the circuit. Once the truck is running, it would be ok to connect the wire -- but starting the truck with it connected can cause problems. As was mentioned, you will not recharge two discharged deep cycle batteries in a drive from the lake to your home. You need an on-board charger that you can plug in at home or at the dock or a portable charger.

Re: charging batteries

thank u for the posts everone. I think i understaqnd now. It is not a good idea to have the truck charge the deep cell batteries. Upinsmoke recomended a on board charger. Does anyone one know what is a good one and what kind to get? There is actually 3 batteries in the bass boat with no outboard on it right now. That is in another formn trying to get fixed. Thank you for your help

Re: charging batteries

Check this site (iboats.com). On board chargers are available in one, two, three, and four bank (one, two, three, or four batteries). You could get by nicely with a two bank. The engine will keep the starting battery charged. A two bank charger is needed if you have a 24 V trolling motor. A single bank will work for one or two batteries in a 12V trolling motor system. 6 amps minimum per bank would be minimum output and least expensive. The larger the current capacity the quicker it will charge the battery -- but also the more expensive they are. Guest, Pro-Mariner, MinnKota are all well known chargers and there are others.

Re: charging batteries

i was looking here on iboats for a onboard charger. I am a little lost with the big selection i have to choose from (lol). Can someone point me to the right direction for a on board charger for my boat. upinsmoke put it well in words but i am a little confused, also new to all this.I have a 12 volt trolling motor runing from 2 12v deep cycle batt. Then I have 1 12v for the radio, electr, etc. thanks again in advance, Mike

Re: charging batteries

OK - here goes: 1) In your first post you said you have no outboard motor -- correct? The battery you are using for the radio, lights, and any other stuff would normally be charged by the engine. Since you don't have one, you need one set of 12V outputs from from an on-board charger. 2)As for the trolling motor, since its 12V, you have two batteries wired in parallel (which equates to one monster 12V battery). To charge that you have two options: One or two sets of outputs from the on-board charger. Why two you ask? Later! If you tally up the outputs needed so far, you should come up with three (hence a three bank charger). The amount you pay for a three bank charger depends on the amount of current the charger can send to each output. As I said earlier, a charger with three 6amp outputs would work for you. 10amps per bank costs more, 15amps more yet, and 20amps more more. Now then -- back to the why two outputs for the trolling motor. The batteries are in parallel so one output would work but the dilema is that this monster battery would take twice as long to charge with a single output than it would if you paralleled two outputs from the charger. Confused yet? If you get your engine on the boat soon, buy a two bank 6A or 10A charger. Let the engine charge the start battery. Otherwise get the three bank. There are other options but I'm out of breath.

Re: charging batteries

Good choice. Similar to mine (Cabela's brand name made by Guest). Had one on my last boat as well and served me well.
