Have I got this right. It's a simple boat wirring project.
1. a fused positive from bat run up to bus under dash.
2. Negative run up to another bus under dash.
3. all negative (earth) from accessories etc connect to the negative bus under dash.
3. 4 positive wires from 4 bus points to a 4 gang fused switch panel. ( deck lights, nav lights, bilge pump and sounder)
4. the positive from the above 4 connect to the fused switches. of course the negatives to the negative bus panel.
5. Gauges dasey chained and + inline fuse to positive bus panel. Negative to negative bus panel.
6. Radio and CDplayer both inline fuses, + to positive bus panel and negative to negative bus panel.

Is this right??
I really think this should be right.

cheers

Guages should be from + when ignition is on so you dont have hte guages "on" all the time. Other than that yup.

Guage lighting can be from positive bus.

if gauge lighting is from + bus, dosn't that mean the lights are always on, even if ignition is turned 'off'?

cheers

No nav lights? I have my gauge lights on a seperate switch, sometimes at night you won't want them on.

Have you thought about a curcuit breaker near the battery for the main '+' buss wire?

Aldo

dunaruna, the main + buss will be fused. the nav lights will be connected to the fused switch panel.
what if I was to wire the gauge lighting together with the nav. lighting. If i need the gauge lighting on, it must be dark enough for the nav. lighting right?

cheers

Yes, that'll work but sometimes you can get night blindness, depends on what color and how bright the gauge lights are. Sometimes you may want them off but still have the nav lights on.

How are you fusing the main buss & where is the fuse located? That fuse will have to handle amps totaling everything coming off the buss.

BTW, you and realgun have given me the confidence to tackle the job of rebuilding my dashboard - wish me luck!

Edit: The buss bar in the pic, is good!

Aldo

Re: Please help wirring issue!

I bet you'll do a super job mate, you know you will.

Now, getting back, I am using a fuse about 5 inches from the positive batt. terminal. prolly 20-50amps, high power fuse. shouldn't be too hard. I don't think it's regulation in australia to have it fused anyway, but im going to.

cheers

No it's not regulation in Australia but it'll give you peace of mind. Now, add up ALL of your accesories, for instance - each nav light has a 10w globe (roughly 1 amp), 2 way radio, stereo (be careful, some can draw big amps), bilge pump, a cig lighter socket to charge the mobile, etc.
Add 5% for voltage drop and you have the size of the fuse you need. 50 or 60 should be about right.

A 50 amp fuse is not easy to find unless you use a stereo amplifier fuse.
A curcuit breaker is resettable & it will trip quicker than a fuse.

Aldo

Re: Please help wirring issue!

mmm...interesting. Whitworths sells 50 amp fuses and housings. I like the sound of a circuit breaker, can you get marine ones and are they expensive?

cheers and look forward to meeting ya mate.

Hella or narva have them. Marine grade resettable circuit breakers. About $20.00. There is even a button on it that allows you to shut down the circuit manually.

Re: Please help wirring issue!

Just read your other post (in Aus).

Here's where I'm at - I got a 23ft bluewater boat, it's currently up at eildon. I can't tow it home because I've blown the donk in the cruiser AND it's for sale. So this is my plan, my next door neigbor wants to go fishing in port phillip, he hasn't got a boat but he's got a cruiser. I have got a boat but no cruiser. He's willing to tow the beast down to the bay for me. The way I see it I can kill two birds with one stone, go fishing AND get the boat into a better location for viewing and (hopefully) a sale. She easily fishes up to 8 guys (4 in comfort). Wanna come?

Aldo

Re: Please help wirring issue!

yep! I'd love to, maybe you can teach me how to catch a snapper. I caught whitting to 50cm this season, but not a single snapper. I just bought a new snapper rig too, haven't christened it yet. I worked some reefs in WP, joes island, eagle rock etc....with no luck. The only pinkie I caught was of mordialloc and totaled about 6cms in length. When you thinking of going?

cheers

Re: Please help wirring issue!

I ain't no fishing guru :( . Maybe we can pool our knowledge (or lack of) and catch one.

I've got to speak to my neigbour first and organise logistics - it will have to be a weekend unless everyone involved can wrangle a weekday off work (hard for me but not impossible). We can either do port phillip or western port - I'm easy.
I haven't fished the southern part of the bay in years, wouldn't mind chasing some whiting around mud island or snapper in the channels - maybe even a have a troll outside the heads  .

O/k, the CB. Just rang my narva supplier, the 60amp unit is about $80.00, it has jumped up in price because it's now marine certified - figures :( .
They are available from repco, bursons, R&E autoparts and supacheap auto. How much are the 50amp fuse/holders?

Aldo
