I found this diagram online for wiring a 3 wire trim system using 2- 12 volt solenoids. I proceeded using this and could not get to work. Take a looksie here:

http://www.brokeboats.com/trim.html

The solenoids (Ford) I bought look identical to the ones shown except the little posts are marked, one with "S" and one with "I". I feel I am simply doing something wrong. I know the trim works because I can take the three wires coming from the trim and touch them straight to battery and it works both up and down.

Please help... I been trying every possible way to make this work and have all but given up.

Re: solenoid wiring for trim

I looked at the diagram and it looks right. When you try to operate yours, are the relays clicking ? The only thing I'm not sure of is the relays you are using, or possibly how they are connected. I'm not sure on this, but I suspect the relays(some people call them solenoids) that you are using need to have the negative lead hooked to the metal base of the solenoid and the hot lead from the switch attached to the S terminal, you would not connect anything to the I terminal (that was used to supply straight 12 volts to an ignition coil while the engine is cranking). If you are trying to use the two small terminals to "energize" the solenoid...it won't work. By the way, if your trim pump is mounted in the engine compartment of an inboard or I/O these solenoids must be marine rated, ignition protected components or you run the risk of igniting gas fumes in your bilge.

I agree with waterone1...most automotive solenoids used the out casing for ground because they were mounted on inner fenders or firewalls, just attach the ground to the casing and you should be good to go.

Thank you both for your replies. Never thought about the ground being in the base of solenoid. I will try this next chance I get.
