1989 sea ray battery charger

hello gysy on my 1989 searay 220 it has a on board battery charger in the dog house, it has two red wires and one black wire coming from it, both red wires goes to the battery switch, what i want to know is when charging what must i put the battery switch on i have a two battery set up <br /><br />battery switch is 1 2 both also can i leave it charging overnight without damaging any thing??<br /><br /><br />thanks much for any info

If you have two red wires the charger is called a two bank (for two batteries). I suspect the charger leads connect directly to the batteries at the POS terminal connection on the switch. If that's the case, the battery switch can be left in any position and both batteries will charge. The switch is typically used as follows:<br />OFF = Both batteries disconnected from system for storage.<br />BAT 1 = Typically is the engine start battery. Engine and all accessories will operate only from BAT 1.<br />BAT 2 = Typically this is the accessories battery and is used when anchored, operating locators, radio, lights, etc to avoid draining start battery.<br />BOTH: Entire electrical system operates from both batteries. Typically used when under way to charge both batteries from the engine.<br />DO NOT SWITCH A BATTERY SWITCH WITH THE ENGINE RUNNING. Unless its a "make-before-break" switch. There are many battery switch wiring schemes so make sure you understand what you have.

Bolo, That charger, if working correctly should reduce it's output as the batteries charge. You should be able to leave it on without cooking the batteries. If this boat is new to you, you might want to monitor the charger and battery voltage and temperature for a while to make sure it is working properly.

hello guys on my battery charger i took off the two red wires that goes to the battery switch , i put the test meter on the wires and they both read <br /><br />3 volts does that mean it is charging ?? or it sopose to push out more volts, <br /><br />it a 20 amp charger on board

Bolo, the first question would be, when you took the voltage reading, where did you have your meter's negative probe ?

oh oh i think i ground it to the battery negative i got 3 volts on each wires, thanks for the come back<br /><br />please leed me in the right direction on how to test it with the tester i dont want to throw out a good working charger thanks much i will be waiting.

If you have a "smart charger", it may cut back its output if it senses no charging current. So your test does not work.<br /><br />The way to test it, is to have the charger off and check the battery voltage (it should be around 12 volts). Then turn on ther charger and quickly check the voltage. If it reads 13+ volts, then the battery is charging. The voltage will gradually go down after the batteries are charged.<br /><br />BTW, see if you can look up the specification/manual on your charger. Given how old the charger is, it is possible it is not a smart charger.<br /><br />Amir
