Fresh or Salt, which to buy?

Shopping for a trolling motor. 18ft bay boat center console. I do an equal amout of fishing in fresh and salt. I know the answer is to probably spend the extra money and get a saltwater model. But would a cheaper freshwater model give me close to the same lifespan? For example; buy a new fresh model every two years verse a new salt model every 4 years? Looking at transom mount versions. Thanks

You burn em out in just 2 years?
You must be doing a lot of fishing.

I vote for the salt water model. I let my 36v MK go with the Lund, that was a sweet motor. Ya get what you pay for..........

Blacktip, the extra you pay for a saltwater ready version is peanuts compared to buying a new motor every two years. I could have bought a Riptide for my boat when I bought my PowerDrive but had plans of extremely limted saltwater use. (One trip every few years, maybe.) Not a 50/50 mix. I think it would have cost me not even $100 to upgrade. I used my motor for the second time ever during a trip to Florida in June and despite my best attempts to hose it off every time, I still got some corrosion around the bolts that hold the mount on the bow. Without the saltwater resistant coating, it just doesn't last. The saltwater versions have the anodes already installed, the seals are different and the electronics are potted differently. If you are that hard on a motor, I would buy the best I could get. Seems counterproductive to put a motor you KNOW is gonna die a quick death on a boat. Buy the salt version and have fun longer.

UFM82

When you buy any equipment, plan for the worst, it will be that or better ;)

I figured that's what most would suggest. It just sucks I need to wait another pay period to buy a salt model. The white will look better with the boat anyway. Thanks
