Still messing with this Evinrude 25hp. I recently had points and condensers replaced and it ran all summer. One day, just wouldn't start. With inline spark tester, had no spark. Pulled flywheel and cleaned the points, reassemble and had strong spark, 85-90 lbs compression, but still wouldn't start. Noticed that fuel pump squirted fuel but was inconsistent. Replaced fuel pump, now I have no spark again. Wondering if I have bad coils? I can keep my F150 and wife's Explorer running but no boat mechanic.

The fuel pumps are very reliable.-----Lots are replaced as a guess.-----Look for wiring that is grounded somewhere.----Post a picture of you coils.

Disconnect kill button and check spark again. Good luck!

Ok so I replaced the woodruff key, put everything back together. Top cylinder has very strong spark, bottom cylinder has spark but not as strong as the top cylinder. Found another issue, fuel tank seems to be sucking air, can hear it when I squeeze the bulb and there's a little fuel around the quick connect. It's an old tank they threw in when I bought that motor last year, so I will buy one sometime this weekend. It's popping and backfiring a little now.

Those steel tanks have some small o-rings in the tank housing.----Easy repair for me.

points don't like to be cleaned with files or sandpaper , the popping and back fire could be caused from the hardened coating on those points being damaged.

post the resistance values as measured from plug boots to engine frame .

look for a steady ohms value 3-8 kohms approx while moving the throttle from idle to high speed .

Contact surfaces on these breaker points form an oxide.----Even new points need to be cleaned , I use 220 grit wet / dry paper.-----It has been this way for 50 + years for me.----So lap the tapers for proper fit and contact.-----Install flywheel with tapers clean and dry.---Torque nut to 45 FT-LBS.

when Telco's ran central offices on gazillion relays.... lapping (burnishing) relay contacts was the usual remedy.

Are you saying pull the boot off of a spark plug and measure with red lead and the other lead to ground? That would measure resistance through the coil?

it measures the coil resitance, plug wire and plug booth pin contact for proper continity.
