I recently tore into my rigging tube to replace my steering cable which was almost locked up.

While I as at it, I decided to pull all of my old fuel line out and replace it as well.

Once I did that, I noticed that the only ugly/old looking stuff remaining was all of my electrical wiring. So, why not replace it as well?

I went ahead and pulled out the seperately loomed harness from the engine. It is still in great shape with water tight connections to the gauges and binnacle mount controls/ignition. So, I put that aside.

When I got into my accessories wiring, I couldn't figure out why I had so many wires. Currently, my boat has the following accessories:

-Red/Green Bow Nav lights (seperate)
-rear Whie pole light
-Bilge Pump
-Depth Finder

I must've had 30 seperate wires running through my boat due to the previous owner having trouble and pulling a new wire, then leaving the old one in there. Needless to say, I pulled out any of the wires that weren't being used. Here's what I ended up with:

With all of the loose-ended wires out of my way, I labeled the necessary wires to run my accessories. I then took them all out and plan to replace them anyway.

After I had all of the wiring out of the boat, I went ahead and pulled the Fuse Block out of the boat. Should I clean this up and re-use it, or should I just replace it?:

I'm leaning towards replacing it. With that said, here's where part recommendation comes into play.

I searched through the mega-mall, and didn't come up with anything that looked quite like it. Any recommendations?

Also, my wires are travelling about 15ft. What size wire and fuse should I use for the following objects?

-Nav Lights
-Bilge Pump
-Baitwell Pump (plan to add this)
-LED Deck Lights (plan to add these)
-Depth Finder

Thanks in advance.

Shawn

Forgot to add:

Do they make a fuse panel like this that is water tight?

I would like to do this one time...and not have to worry about it again...and I don't want the future owners to worry about it either.

I plan to do the wiring and connections correctly (once I figure out how that is...crimp, solder, or both? )

Thanks
Shawn

Other than heat-shrink on all connections, what can I use to make sure the blade connections stay corrosion free?

I find it amazing that people spend the time/money to heat shrink all of their wiring, and then leave an open blad connection or ring terminal on the end.

SQ

bingo..!! exactly..!!

i'd clean it up an re-use.. a new one will get that way pronto..

get some CRC contact cleaner available everwhere.. spray/soak the snot-out-of-it..

then push each fuse in & out many times while spray wet ..

good as new..

funny how wires multiply.. :)

if'n you use all the same color wire,, say white.. take a 'sharpie' an write on each conductor what it is..

an/or/also,, buy a multi color tape pack at hardware or even 'dollar store' an wrap identifing color wrap at terminated ends..

also right at the mounted fuse block ( say mounted on white substrate ) write on substrate what is as wire leaves fuse block.. also a 'legend' of what the tape colors mean..

i'd use marine grade 'tinned' wire..

buy all 14 guage..
BINGO..!!
yes,, there is.. hardware store by a small tube of aluminum wire no-oxidation compound.. put on every mechanical connection.. fuses, spade/sta-cons/push on connectors, trailer bulbs , trailer plug, ect,whatever..

little tube last forever .. an alittle dab is all that's needed..

crimp & solder..

Crab,

The black liquid tape is what you talk about to dab on the connections?

I tried this on a terminal that my battery switch connects to...and it corroded underneath it...maybe I bought the 'cheap' stuff.

Thanks for the help.

SQ

no,, 'black liquid tape' is an insulator..such as real tape but it's liquid..

stuff i say,, is not an insulator but a conductor of electricity.. an keeps connections from the 'greenies'..

Ideal brand "no-al-ox" is one.
Fargolene is another.
Gardner Bender brand anti-ox comes in a red tube.

Look in the elcctrical dept of a home improvement store.
It's a gray greasy compound that coats and protects aluminum conductors and terminations in electrical panel assemblies and the like.
