Re: navman fuel sender

It depends on where the sender is located and how the fuel lines are plumbed. The sender can only meter fuel for the line its installed in. If there are two separate lines from the tank - no it won't measure the small motor useage. If the sender is installed in a line that splits after the sender and one line goes to each engine, yes it will.

Thanks for the reply I only have one line from the tank so it should work do you have any idea what the lowest gph this unit will measure I can seem to find it on their web site
Thanks again

Navman say that the fuel transducer is only suitable for 90HP> (4 stroke).

I had one fitted to my V8, very accurate, I think it went down to about 1/2 gallon per hour (although my V8 usually used 3 or 4 gallons per hour).

Even if it doesn't measure the small engine, the eight HP will likely use so little fuel it really won't matter much, unless of course you run it all day. By the way -- understand that the sensor must be installed before the fuel line splits and goes to each engine.

Re: navman fuel sender

Hate to through a kink in your plans but I want to add that you may have a small problem running an extra engine off of the main engine fuel supply.
The navman should be set up to remain "on" when the main engine is running. That is a setup option in the navman menu. There should be no way to turn it off while using the main engine or it will give incorrect "remaining fuel" levels. Turn the navman off when the engine is in use and it will have no way of registering fuel usage. Now run the small engine and the main engine's ignition will be off, right? If you remember to manually turn the navman on while using the small engine, you have no problem. If you run the small engine while trolling or fishing, then you most likely will not forget to turn on the navman.
The fuel sender unit should be installed after an inline filter. If you "T" off of the main fuel line too close to the main engine, you risk the small engines fuel pump siphoning fuel away from the main engine's supply line. That may or may not cause a problem.
You have the right idea. I like the navman's fuel monitor program too. Just wanted to offer some advice from personal experience with the fuel sender unit.

Re: navman fuel sender

Is it not possible to wire the navman unit into both engine ignition switches so it will turn on with which ever motor I am using

I guess I would diode-protect the two power leads to the Navman just in case one ignition switch is left on inadvertently so one engine does not back-feed the other.

Re: navman fuel sender

Does the 8 hp Yamy have a remote key switch to wire into? Just to keep it simple, don't forget to have the navman on while you are running the kicker motor. It only knows that fuel is flowing through the primary fuel line and it doesn't care if it is going to the big motor or small motor. The small engine may not even flow enough to register. If you forget then you'll only make the remaining fuel level off by a little as the 8 hp probly doesn't burn that much fuel anyway.
