Minn Kota comp.. shaft broken!!!

Has anyone ever done this? I was out today with my PD40 and hit a stump at 2mph. It is now broken in two! I wonder if the 37deg water had anything to do with it?

i thought those shafts were guaranteed for life?i had a trolling motor with that type it says the shaft will never break.!!!!!!!!!guess that statement was wrong.water temp maybe thats hard to say.

It's doubtful that temps contributed to the failure of the composite shaft. More likely there was a nick or deep scratch that just happened to coincide with the force of the stump. Plain bad luck.<br /><br />Call Minn Kota. They're very good at customer support.

Lifetime warranty- call MK and ask them where to take it to get it fixed. Inconvenient? Yes. Unacceptable? Not to me. Go bend a shaft on a MG and see what they tell you. <br /><br />UFM82

I called Minn Kota.. They apologized and told me to bring it to my local repair center, and assured me that it will be as good as new at no charge!<br />I don't want people to read this and start bashing Minn Kota because I have beat the absolute hell out of this thing since I took it out of the box(It is amazing how much that shaft can bend without breaking)!<br />If that was a motorguide, I would probably have destroyed the entire motor, and possibly my boat.<br />Well my wife is happy because I can finally start working on the house.......Until freeze up!!!

glad they took care of you thats cool my shaft is bent on my mg hope to get shaft fixed.good luck on the house.i did that last year.this year restore old truck for some boat&fishing money

Good for you, B,G. ... glad to hear it.<br /><br />I agree that MK customer service is about as good as it gets. I inherited a 1994 MK 27# Turbo-40 (How THAT name came about is a mystery to me). Over the past year I have, like you, used the livin H _ _ _ out of it. On many days the kicker may see 45 minutes running time and the MK 6 to 7 hours.<br /><br />I got to know customer service when I rewired the motor to extend the leads and did some general upkeep. Brenda in CS went far beyond what I could have expectd in helping me identify the parts I needed.<br /><br />Good as it is, I figure my Grand kids will be running this MK after I'm gone.

I just have to ask the question......<br /><br />bgagnon....you did check that the drive pin didn't shear instead of the prop shaft breaking? Seems that would have to have been one strong drive pin to cause the shaft to break first.<br /><br />I've dealt with MK for about 15 years now and yes....they do have great customer service.

The stum never hit the prop, just the housing.

That had to be one helluva whack to blow the prop shaft. Let us know, if you can, just where the breakage occured on the shaft. Might be useful someday.

OBJ -- I think he's talking about the composite vertical shaft - not the propeller shaft.
