I am hoping to find some help on getting my boat up and running. I am a first time boat owner and I could use some help.
I noticed that my harness on the inside of my motor (85 hp Mercury) is frayed and crumbling. Can anybody please let me know where I can get a new harness at a good price? I live in Nashville Tennessee. Also if anybody knows of any good fishing holes let me know.
Thanks
Mark

Re: wiring harness

I find Ebay to be a good start. Sometimes you have to keep looking till you find what you need. But, it's amazing the stuff that ends up there. You might be able to find a complete motor with a blown powerhead or lower unit cheaper than trying to find a replacement harness.

Re: wiring harness

Try your Mercury dealer. Otherwise check your local marine salvage yards. However, 20 year old motors in a salvage yard probably have harnesses that are as bad or worse than the one you have.

There are CDI replacement harnesses available. both internal and external. You have to search around different parts sites on the internet. I can't recall where I found them last summer, But I bought an an external harness to repair an old control. The place also had the internal harness. You have to Know your year and serial number.

Thaks for the responses to my question, Dou you happen to have any web sites that you could give me to find what I need? Tried ebay but no luck so far. Like I said before I am still new to this, I am in Nashville Tn. I am going to try to find some places around here so wish me luck. Hopefully I can have this thing up and running by spring.

Re: wiring harness

If you have a 1973 - 1975 the Rapair/CDI part # is 414-2770. If you have a 1976 - 1977 the part # is 414-3369. http://www.nicksoutboardmarine.com/mercignpg4.html
These are the harnesses inside. The harness for connecting the motor to the remote control is listed below the internal harnesses at the link.

what's wrong with the Cumberland River? there's a reservoir and hydroelectric dam out close to you also, I've seen it from plane leaving BNA, I think it's ESE of Nashville, but not far.

Re: wiring harness

This link might be cheaper than the last one I gave you. enter part # 414-2770 for 1973 - 1975 or 414-3369 for 1976 - 1977. Remember the problem with a used harness is that it might not be any better with what you have now. That is why I recommend new. It is up to you and your budget. good luck. I really like my 85HP. https://www.surplusunlimited.com/Merchant2/merchant.mvc?
