battery losing water

my water level drops a lot in my starter battery but not in my trolling batteries while stored. it is hot in stge unit. no leaks found, could lids not fit tight enough and evaportation takes place. any suggestions on sealing. no elec. wires hooked to batteries while stored. Puzzled.

That happens to batteries that are shorting out. Particles flake off the lead pates and settle to the bottom. If the sediment piles get high enough, they contact the plates and short out the battery and cook-off the acid. That happens with Old batteries. Marine starting batteries are good for 3 years, 4 if you really take good care of it. Older than that? Chuck it.

Loss of battery soup can also be the result of too high a charge voltage. If you have your starting batt sitting on a charger I'd check the charger's voltage. If it loses soup while just sitting, go back and re-read WillyBWright's posting above...then chuck that batt.
