evinrude trolling motor speed control switch bad?

My evinrude 12/24 trolling motor (mod BF4TK serial H02649810) only runs when the foot pedal switch that should let the motor spin slow, medium, or fast is in the fast position and in either 12v or 24v mode. I used to have slow, medium, and fast speed. Is the foot pedal speed control switch bad? Can this switch break in a way that the motor no longer has variable speeds but only allows the motor to be "on" or "off"?
Or would someone suspect that it is not the switch because if the switch breaks then the motor cannot be switched on at any speed?
Thanks
Brent

The "slow" and "medium" contact points can get dirty. I'm not familiar with that particular switch but a 3-position toggle on the foot pedal of my motorguide got dirt inside where it would only work in one position. If you can take it apart & clean it out with wd-40 & put it back together that might just do it.

Some motors use "speed coils" that are switched into the circuit singly or in combination to provide all speeds except fast. Thats a direct feed. If your motor uses them, one of the speed coils may have opened rendering that speed inoperative. Has nothing to do with the switch. Although the switch could be bad I doubt that's the problem.

Cleaned the contacts but I didn't gain slow or medium speed. Anyone have any other ideas?

Is there a way to access the speed coils to see if they may have opened and then replace them? Couldn't find much info on the web about this motor.

I'm not even sure your motor has them but I suspect it does. If they are used, they are in the motor housing so it would need to be opened up. The parts may be availble from a Johnny/Rude dealer but that's a real "maybe". If not, and if one could find out what the resistance was for the coils, wire wound resistors from Radio Shack could be made to work -- again, if they would fit into the housing. If you really like the motor, you would eliminate the speed coils in the motor housing, wire directly to the motor and then rewire the resistors external to the motor. The problem with that is the wire wound resistors get quite hot so care would be needed mounting them. Perhaps you could check e-bay for another dead motor but with good coils.

Thanks.

Sounds like it is time to look for a new motor
