They can be repiared BUT i think you will find it cheeper to replace it if you cant do some DIY

Start simple and be sure its getting AC

tommays

Most of those should have a fuse on them as well. Is it attached to a battery, some of them won't turn on unless they are attached to a battery, need some kind of a load on them to turn on.

Some chargers are potted, and most of the insides are not servicable.you can get a decent smart charger for less than 100$ thats the route I,d go.

Jim

Re: can a battery charger be rebuild???

If you could hear a hum before then you have the older kind with a ferro resonant transformer inside, these are very reliable but not as flexible as the newer switching types, does it not have any kind of a power indicator light on it? If it's hardwired into your boats AC power system there must be a breaker somewhere for it (if it was wired to code) Do you have a shorepower panel.....don't be too quick to throw it out at until you can verify the AC input is OK.

Agree that once you verify power is available to it and it isn't working, chunk it.

Nowadays, replacement parts for electronic things are nearly as expensive as the thing it'self plus you have to find the mfgr, get the right part number, and pay for and wait for shipping.

Additionally, when you get a new one, you know it's working properly and won't overcharge your batteries, or possibly cause a fire.

My onboard has 2 lights when I plug it up. Red and green. Red on when charging over 5 amps, red and green on together between 5 and trickle, green is trickle. If a light isn't on it's not plugged in to AC power.

Mark

When Bob suggested checking the fuse(s) he meant in the output, not the input. If you have AC to the unit, check the fuses (should be one in each of the three output leads). If they are ok, disconnect each output and measure voltage. If none is present, its junk.

The humming won't cut out when charged it's just a normal characteristic of that style of charger.
