I've got a MinnKota Neptune setup on a pontoon boat, it's the twin setup, and it has two black boxes (one for each motor) between the motors and the speed controller. One of these black boxes (control box) is bad so I can only get one motor to work at a time, I know that the problem is in this box because by wiring either of the motors to the good box the system works, wire to the bad box and it doesn't work.

So far I'm having a tuff time locating a replacement, I guess it's been a while since these things were on the market, anyone have any ideas where I could find one, used preferably?

Thanks.

Open the box (if possible), take a good look and post back with what you see inside. Chances are what you see may look like coils. If so, these are speed coils that control the motor speed. If you are handy and somewhat electrically inclinded, the speed coils can be replaced with large wattage wire wound resistors available from Radio Shack or similar electronic outlets and surplus stores. Measure the values of the coils in the good box and buy resistors of comparable resistance. Wire them in the same configuration and you should be back in business. You'll need to be a little creative in mounting the resistors but a little thought will solve that problem. Just remember that resistance makes heat so take that into account when figuring out a mounting scheme.

First thanks for the response. Will get into the boxes but since asking the question have discovered that I can effect the stalling by pressing on the foreword / reverse switch rocker (pushing firmly on the rocker).

I have Two black boxes fed from the foreword / reverse - speed control via a "Y" cable. Removed the covers from both boxes and there are no coils or resistors. just Three solid state relay's or whatever, Three capacitors and everything's been coated with dielectric epoxy. No sign of excessive heat in either box.

Did you ever get it figured out. I may have an extra controller in my garage...let me know if you still need one. They are about $200 but you can also also change out the system to a system that has two 80 lb motors and a EM 160 controller. The motors are about $200 each, props $40, shafts $20 and the controller with new remote speed controller about $300.00. I did this to a friends because we couldn't find parts. I think the part number for the replacement controller was something like 238-4016. You may be able to find one at a SuperCenter...

Re: Minn Kota Neptune EP96

Hi,
I'm looking at this option since my control units have turned bad on my EP96 setup. Please advice on where I can get Vantage motors without the tilt and trim (just the motors). If Vantage has 80-lb thrust, does it mean that having 2 motors will give 160 lbs thrust? Would the EP96 tilt and trim hold up under heavier thrust?
Also, can I get the Vantage 101 lb thrust and have 2 of them? I can rewire to 36 volts to ge this.
Thanks for your help.

Same problem here (one of the controller boxes went up in smoke !).

Seems that my reference # was 238-4028. Does anyone know where I can get these (or has one spare ?)

Thanks !

Paul.

Re: Minn Kota Neptune EP96

Anyone selling an EP96 motor ?
I fixed my issue with the controller box but one of the engines does not function (I get 24v upto the head of the motor but it will only "sputter" (ie. turn like 1 tour per second...irregularly)

Cheers,
Paul.

New to the site and am looking for a EP96 control box. Did anyone ever come up with a source?
In the meantime I have spliced both motor wires to the one good box and everything seems to be working fine. I know at some point I will probably burn out the good one .... so if anyone can help please let me know.

Re: Minn Kota Neptune EP96

MinnKota now makes the EM system that has a dual controller that can be used to replace the old controller from the EP system. The only bad part is that you have to by a new hand controller but, is without the FWD/REV switch on the side. Clockwise fwd, counter clockwide reverse...
