I've decided to rebuild the carbs on my 1999 Evinrude 115. I've got the rebuild kits, and it looks pretty straight forward. Is there anything I should be aware of before doing this?

Id most definetly have a manual on hand.Follow instructions.Remember the carbs are how you get lubrication in a 2 stroke. Improper lubrication and youll have lots of wear in the engine really fast.

Be thorough. You are in there to clean the jets and orifices and replace the parts in the kit. Making the outside of the carb look good isn't the point. Take the carb apart and remove the non metal parts and soak it overnite in a bucket of carb cleaner. Then blow out the jets with compressed air. Then replace the parts that come in the kit and set the float and idle screws (which you have removed) as per the manual.

Junkie, Sounds like you got pretty good advise. I'm about to rebuild my carbs in my 83' 70 hp evinrude, and would like to know how costly were the carb kits. I hope I get a response and great advise as you did!
Thanks Deuce

Looks like the OMC part # for your motor would be a 396701... Kits for that motor are plentiful online... They'll range from $15 to $20 per carb. You might even be able to get the part locally.

Thanks for all the good advise. I'll try it this weekend. I have a manual. Do I need to sycronize the carbs after this?

The kits were only about $20

You can probably get away with not having to syncronize the carbs if you do not disconnect the linkage between them when you take them off. I did mine (1987 OMC 1.6L V4) this way last weekend. Also make sure that you check the float height and not assume that they were OK right out of the box. Mine were both way off.

The manual shows a "special" OMC tool for checking the float height. They don't give the measurement, except for float drop. Is there another way to measure the height? The local shop does not have this tool.

I just did my 1987 OMC V4. My shop manual called for the float to be level with the body when upside down and a drop of 1" when flipped over. A special guage was not needed.

Thanks SoLittle. I think this is a different carb though. It's a 1997 115spl. The manual shows some type of gauge that sits on the flange, like a go no go gauge. Does anybody have any experiance with adjusting this type of carb float?
