Hey nugs....lemme me get this straight....smoke issues from under the flywheel when the key is turned to on or when the motor is running. Is that about it? Just need some more info. Thanks.

the key doesn't even need to be in the on position, as long as the battery is hooked up it smokes, a guy on another board said possibly the battery voltage was going to the magneto??? it never did this before then out of the blue it started

Nugs....the only way I can see this happening is if the rectifier has failed in a way cause a direct lead to the alternator under the flywheel. The rectifier will have four leads coming from it. Disconnect the RED lead from the terminal strip. Tap the positive battery lead to the positive battery terminal. Any sparks? If you have sparks with the rectifier RED lead connected, and none when it's disconnected, then I would have to say the rectifier is fried. Just a question, you have never mistakenly hooked up the battery leads in reverse have you?

Nugs,

I think OBJ nailed it. If you hook up the battery cables backwards-POOF! And, you can count on a cooked rectifier and maybe a stator. :(

Nugs...if ya' are interested in do-it-yer-self repairs, get a manual for your engine. OEM is preferred for the more deeper problems. Generics are good for everyday PM type maint. Search for Ken Cook Co. for a reprint of the original service manual or go to the iboats store for a generic.
I would bet the rectifier will need replaced. The stator, under the flywheel, may also need replaced. Seeing smoke does not bode well for electrical systems.
The fastest and most expensive way is to take it to a boat shop. The slower way, get a manual and fix it yerself.
