I'm replacing water pump parts and got a "Sierra" impeller repair kit which matches the parts I took off except for the O-ring. Q1: When I took the water pump off, a chewed up O-ring fell out and I'm not sure where it was. The official Johnson parts diagram (from dealer) shows the O-ring above the impeller cup and below the housing. The one in the kit seems to be too small and I don't see anything to hold it in place. Should I just put in in and hope for the best? Q2: My dealer suggested using OMC gasket sealer where my Clymer manual says to use OMC adhesive M on the large water pump O-ring put into the bottom of the housing. Should I?

All o-rings held in place with adhesive M, except the o-ring in the impeller, and the 0-ring on the end of drive shaft iaw OMC service manual. Careful with the glue on the o-ring that goes under the impeller cup, there is small air bleed hole in plastic housing, if stopped up with glue may not pump. The M is only used to stick the o-ring in the groove. It is inporting to replace the o-ring between the housing and impeller cup, and this o-ring probley not in the Serria impeller kit.

Thanks for the info. It's amazing how many different descriptions there are out there. The old water pump (Put in by previous owner) didn't have the O-ring between the cup and the housing, just some hardened sealer. I ended up getting a full replacement water kit which had the right parts. Now if I can only figure out why the engine keeps reving when idling....

That oring is in the sierra kit and it's squared, as in flat on top and bottom, not round. the round oring goes at the top of the driveshaft, just below the splines.......

I didn't find it in there... There was the big O-ring and two of the small O-rings that fit the shaft. Maybe the one kit I got had the wrong parts? Anyway, the pump's running very well now.

I am not familiar with the aftermarket Sierra kit, but the genuine factory kit, #5001594, for your motor contains 3 o-rings in it. One for the driveshaft, one for between the cup and the water pump housing, and the 3rd one, fat looking that fits the around the driveshaft, goes underneath the impeller and fits into a recess in the impeller.

Be sure you are looking at the correct diagram for your year model. My 1997 does not have the oring "under" the impellor, but the oring for the housing to the cup could be either flat or round, and yes, it is possible to have a part missing. I ordered a complete powerhead gasket set(I sell sierra), and the gasket set contained only one head gasket and four thermostat gaskets-should be 2-each.

Thanks again - sounds like I got the right ones in the right places! <br />Just have to add how stupid I was on Sunday, though. After putting the lower unit back on, I forgot to tighten the round trim tab piece that is above the propeller. I guess it must of spun around and the propeller hit the tab and eventually (luckily) the round piece and bolt fell off. The propeller now has a nice 1 cm slice cut into it! More shopping to do.
