I just installed a new VRO on my 1989 Evinrude 60HP 3 Cylinder. Is there a test that I can perform to make sure that it is working correct. Is there a way that I can test to make sure that the warning system works. Thanks for the help.

bass man,

Simply fill the oil tank and put a mark on it so you can monitor oil useage. Run 50:1 mixture in the fuel until you verify.

I believe you can ground the tan wire to test the horn.

Do you mean the tan wire from the VRO? If so where is the test horn? Thanks

bass-man,

Yes, that tan wire.

The warning horn is in the control box. (gear/throttle lever control box)

Sorry for so many questions. I do not know what the control box looks like, do you have any idea where it is on the engine?

Bass Man,

The control box is what you use to drive the boat. It is the box that the gear shift/throttle lever is attached to.

It also contains: the warm up lever, key and trim switch (on throttle handle)

I see, so should I just take a piece of wire long, enough to reach from the engine to the control box, and connect the tan wire and then touch the warning horn. Where on the horn do I touch the wire?

Bass Man,

No. Just ground the tan wire (engine side of harness-NOT VRO pump side of harness) to the engine block. The horn should sound. The key will need to be "ON".

That's why were here. Hope it works out.

By the way, you can replace that horn with one that will "prove out" or beep every time you turn the key on.

Really, do you know where I can get that horn. That would be great to know that it works everytime I start the bought.

Bass Man,

Any John/Rude dealer can fix you up.

You will have to take aprt the control box to install it. It's not difficult.

Is there a part number I should give them. What should I ask for when I go in. Do you have any idea on the cost.

Bass Man,

I do not have a part number.

Just ask for the warning horn that gives the "prove out" beep.

Bassman,If you have side mount controls you may have the alarm test slot hole under the end of the fast idle lever.Lift it and see.If there is one just turn the key to the "on" position and insert a key or similar metal tool into slot which completes circuit to alarm horn, and alarm should sound.
