hello...
i just bought a 1998 Baja Hammer with a Evinrude 250 V8. i havn't picked the boat up yet but have a few general questions:

1: is this a good motor for a 2100lb deep v hull?
2: what kind of rpm's should it turn?
3: anyone use boysen reed's?
4: pro's and con's...what should i look out for?
this motor is a 1991 and has about 200 hours of freshwater use. the boat is a 1 of a kind and has a stainless marine gill bracket and a highjacker hydrolic jack plate. the lower end has a pin hole in the bullit part fo it. i am hoping to put a low water pickup on it to cover the hole.hopefully this will be a 75mph boat!thanks for any help....james

Hi there hammer:

I think you'll be happy with that boat...sounds like a great setup. I'm a little suspect about the 75mph thing but you never know until you get it out on the water. Gook luck.

I believe the hole you are refering to is a speedo pick up. Why do you want to cover it?

At 75 you do not need a nose cone. Blowout is higher than that with any of the V8 cases. It may even slow the boat down some at that speed.

Run the boat as is and see where youre at. #1 rule of set up is establish your baseline. This is not a V6!!! Do not set it up as one!

The Boyesen reeds are great! BUT the looper reeds dont give up until about 7200 rpm.

Personaly I like the V8's. Remember it lives on fuel pressure - fuel delivery is critical.

Have fun!

thaNKS FOR THE RESPONSE GUY'S.
the pin hole i am referring to is on the bottom of the lower unit.it is weeping out oil.i need to have it fixed. i am hoping the low water picup weld will cover the hole.DHADLEY: what do you mean by blowout? also, what will this V8 safly rev out to? my old bridgeport liked to rev right out.i'm hoping this will do the same.also, whats a looper reed? i don't know much about reed motors.port timed....thats another story!thanks...james :D

Get the leak fixed properly. Covering it with anything is simply a band aid. You dont want that or any gearcase to come apart at speed. Ask blowover Bob and the kids he ran into when his did.

The rev limiter on that motor is either at 6200 or 6700 depending on which pack you have.

Your Merc bridgeport had reeds too. You asked about Boyesen reeds - yes they are great but the ones you have in the motor now (if they are original) will work fine right through 7200 rpm.

Nosecones are installed to raise the blow out speed. Thats when the prop catches up with the vortex of air caused by the gearcase running through the water. The blow out speed of a V8 case is higher than 75. Addig a nosecone at this point will place stress on the upper motor mounts and possibly slow you down because of increased drag. The V8 cases are fairly long to start with.

Get the leak fixed properly and run the boat to see how it handles as is and to establish a baseline.

Good luck!

Since the boat has been running for a number of years the fuel delivery system is most likely OK. As long as there have been no problems with the powerhead.

I would remove the anti-siphon valve from the tank outlet if it has one. A good water seperator is a must as with any motor. If you intend to use the oil pump I would drain the tank and start with fresh oil to insure prpoer type and no water. All fuel lines should be 3/8" ID. No bulkhead fittings. No 90 degree fittings. No primer bulb. The electric primer pump is excellent. If the motor is stock (heads not cut etc) use FRESH 87 octane fuel. Champion spark plugs only! Any OE oil or Pennzoil Marine Blend.

The compression should be around 90 or so and even across the board. No water in the gearcase. Double check the steering. Then look at it again. make sure the ignition cut off switch works and wear it. Wear a good vest rated at least at 100 mph impact.

Before you actually take delivery have the previous owner show you (whether you are in the boat or not) that the boat will handle at speed. If the boat is undriveable its of no use to you.

Good luck!

I read your post and the replys and then went on surfing other posts, but could not get yours out of my mind so I came back. If you are going to Key Largo, Fl. you need a good map if you go West of US 1. Very shallow water if you get out of the channels which are not very well marked. At 75 mph you can go a long way on a shallow flat before you are aground and this time of year the nights can be chilly.
