It is not a pretty reliable engine - it is one of the most reliable engines.<br /><br />The only thing you should check is the compression, which should be between 105 and 125, and within 10 on both cylinders, and gearoil must be clear and free of water.<br /><br />They have a weekness corroding around headgasket, after manny years in heavy saltwater, all other problems are smaller and fixble.Really reliable.

I have a 1971 Johnson that still fires up faster than alot of the new Yamahas on the lake and it runs like a charm with little maintenance. That's reliability.
