It is a 1989 engine and looks like the correct carbuator. Check roller in linkage that has a long curved slot, roller should have clear plastic sleeve, if sleeve is missing idle and advanced timing will be off. When I clean a carb,I use a strand of copper wire to clear all passages, when you are sure that carbs are clean and floats set, do a link and sync, dont skip any steps. Check plastic cap on fuel pump for splits, and bad orings, there is update kit for this.

Re: 1994 Evinrude 48

I have a 1988 Johnson 48 SPL with a poor idle. After reading this thread, I checked the "roller in linkage that has a long curved slot, roller should have clear plastic sleeve, if sleeve is missing idle and advanced timing will be off."

In my case, the clear plastic sleeve has broken into two pieces, half of which is sitting in the engine pan and the other half still clinging to the cam follower. Question: Where can I get a new plastic sleeve or what parts do I have to get to get a new plastic sleeve?

The roller and sleeve come as one part, dealer item.

J48ESLCCC. Is the sync cam supposed to be mounted loosely, i.e., a fair amount of play side to side?

The 1988 48hp parts list does not show the curved linkage with slot. The pn for a 1989 48hp is 432572 and the roller on the carbuator arm is 397499. You should verify these numbers with dealer that has current manuals and bulletins. Your engine may be a late production model and have 1989 linkage.

Re: 1994 Evinrude 48

Thanks. Looking at a 1990 exploded diagram, the part I'm referring to is called a "throttle cam". The lower carburator has an arm with a cam follower that has a roller with a clear plastic sleeve. That clear plastic sleeve is what cracked in half. The throttle cam seems to be very loosely mounted (lots of side to side play). Is that normal?
