I just finished rebuilding the lower gear casing on my 1961 evinrude 75HP and spilled a bit of gear oil on the lower gear casing but after running it for about 15-20 minutes in a trash can for water i noticed quite a bit of oily stuff on the top of the water. Could that be from the exaust or am i going to have to rebuild again? The fuel to oil ratio i used was 1:24.?

sounds like it was from the exhaust .possibility some was from the lower unit but the lower unit would tend to leak more out of water if the leak was at prop shaft seal.If concerned remove drain plug from lower unit and drain small amount of oil out to see if it is water contaminated. Water will either emullsify in oil or settle to bottom.

probably from exhaust.. I would drain the gear lube from the gear case just to be sure.. If it's milkey then ya know its leaking.. If ok then change it again after 5-10 hours of use after rebuild..... :)
