Re: Hydro-Electric Lube Question?

wow, you guys have it cheap..

we pay just under a dollar a litre, (4 litres to a gallon I think.)

Think I'll try premium next time I fill up, so how I go. Don't really want to, but if it runs better, I guess I don't have alot of choice. I personally don't think it will make a great deal of difference. but it can't hurt to try.

thanks for the info.

rgds

Frank

Re: Hydro-Electric Lube Question?

Hello Franki;
Just thought that I would add my 2 cents worth in here, take it for what it's worth.I've been in several of these most was showing the same symptoms that you are discribing. What I usually found was a sticky plunger in the pump. I would just pull the plunger chuck it up in a drill press and polish it with the finest paper that I could find. Of course while you are there clean that pump and screen. You are right tho this unit is spring loaded into fwd, shifted into neut. with one selonid, then shifted into rev. with two.
lotsa luck

Re: Hydro-Electric Lube Question?

Cool,

Thanks heaps..

I have just heard many horror stories with regards to stripping the foot that I really wasn't all that keen on trying it..

Am I to assume that I can get to the soleniods and stuff by just dropping the leg and unbolting the pump from the top of the gearcase? or do I have to completely strip the greatcase, (ie unbolting inside the exhaust outlet and sliding the whole works out.)

any tips or tricks I should be aware of while I am doing this?

rgds

Frank

Re: Hydro-Electric Lube Question?

You can access the shift solenoids and plunger from the top of the lower unit just forward of the water pump...the cover with the wire coming out. There are a whole bunch of parts on this thing so be sure you have them in the right order when reassembling. I would say clean that up and if it doesn't fix your problem and you notice that it is really sticky and grimy, you may still ned to get inside of the lower unit housing. Lets hope this works though. About the gas...your reply was expected as I have a friend in Aukland who visits here a couple of times each year and is amazed at what we pay for gas.

Jim

Mr. Woods,

Would you please e-mail me the schematic you were sending Frankie? I'm working on the same problem for my neighbor's 50 HP.

Thanks,
Terry G.
tgordon@adelphia.net

Re: Hydro-Electric Lube Question?

Hi Terry,

I have not yet received any diagrams, I thought maybe mr woods was having problems scanning them or something..

If you get them ok, can you let me know?

I wish someone like Johnson and Evinrude would actually put schematics for their old outboards online. instead of selling the rights to a publication company in the US. (that don't sell them online, and don't mention overseas shipping on their site.)
They would be more likely to get a loyal following if they did..

thanx

rgds

Frank

Re: Hydro-Electric Lube Question?

Well guys, I did it, I have gritted my teeth, dropped the leg, and pulled of the soleniod cover.

One of the wires leading down to the bottom soleniod was mostly broken just under the cover, so thats one thing to fix, I have lifted the whole assembly out, cleaned the lot up and gave the plunger and the outside of the soleniods and both shafts a quick buff with some really fine emery paper.

it all seems ok.. I can't find anything wrong, putting power to one of the wires while earthing the body of the unit does indeed result in it becoming magnetic, ditto with the other.. so they are all right.

with everything clean and smooth, I figure its time to replace the wires that were damaged, and install the lot back in again.

Or have I forgotten something? (for example, where is this diode people keep speaking of?)
Also, do I have to strip the foot to clean the pump screen?)

Just as a description for those who haven't done this and want to, there are 4 bolts holding the cover on, remove them, then lift the cover up, the two wires connect to to round cylenders, (the soleniods) which sit in an upright cutout tube running down into the gearcase. (don't lose the spring clip sitting on top of the top solenid between it and the cover.)

gently lifting the cover and wires and the whole assembly will come out more or less as one piece..

the two soleniods sit on top of each other. the bottom one has a tube of around 15cm or 6.8 inchs length) fixed to the bottom of it. (although it is fixed, it can slide about 5 ml in and out, but it can't slide out completely.)
running through both soleniods is a little piston or plunger attached to a long straight thin shaft. 22cm or 10 inchs long. that plunger fits into a recess in the top of the top plunger and the shaft on the plunger fits right down through both soleniods and the tube on the bottom one.
Here is a piccy I just made of it, very rough, but it serves its purpose.
hope it helps someone.

rgds

Franki

Re: Hydro-Electric Lube Question?

Franki, did neither you or terry get the diagrams? I scanned and sent them to both of your private e-mails? Maybe I'm doing something wrong with my scanner, but I haven't had problems in the past. If there still not there, let me know and I'll try sending them again. By the way am I mr woods? Like as in Raleigh Wood?

Re: Hydro-Electric Lube Question?

Franki,

I'm sorry, I'll try to size the scans down a little. I sent them in grey/scale? I thought they were saved as jpegs. Keep an eye on your e-mail, I'll keep trying, I know they would help. :(

Re: Hydro-Electric Lube Question?

Hi again Mr Ron,

Are you still gonna send me the diagrams you have sir?

I have only received that electrical one you sent through..

It may be necessary for you to zip the images up using Winzip, or send them in several different emails as many mail servers have size limitations.

Did you hear that I got the gearbox working again? (I posted a topic on it.)

but there is so much I currenly don't know about this motor, so anything you can provide would certainly be much appreciated.

rgds

Frank

Re: Hydro-Electric Lube Question?

Guys, I didn't forget about ya. I was having some troubles with my scanner. I resized and sent everything individually. Hopefully this time everything got where it was going. Franki, congratulations on your successful fix! Good Luck, Ross "aka" Raleighwood

Re: Hydro-Electric Lube Question?

frank,

i think the tan wire is a temperature switch that switches either the overheat buzzer/horn or operates the choke solenoid. i don't have my manual with me to confirm.

please dont forget to forward those pics to me.

thanks

sonnie

Re: Hydro-Electric Lube Question?

Franki,

If you would be so kind as to send those diagrams along to sonny, it would be greatly appreciated, my scanner has "smoke" coming off of it. LOL I never got a chance to send them to sunny, as I was trying to send them to you and terry. Best of luck, glad I could help. Ross :)
